They can handle quite a bit. Your best bet is to buy a 904 that was originally behind a V-8 and just swap in the guts. This has been covered numerous times before. Search the site for "v-8 guts".

The only thing I could think of would be the truck/van oil pan, but that wouldn't clear the steering linkage (and probably not the k frame either) in a Volare.
