What is a good way to modify an A-body fuel tank for an internal EFI pump(other than having a pro do the welding)? I would like to be able to remove the pump w/o having to drop the tank from the car.

I'd like to attempt the GM EFI mods.

Sounds like a good project. If it were mine, I'd just drop the tank. Haven't done it on your A body, but every one I've pulled hasn't been that big a deal. As for a tank for your EFI, I'd take my tape measure to the local pick-a-part and find the closest suitable tank off an EFI car and the modify the mounts in the car accordingly. If you're "bucks-up" Summit Racing has EFI ready tanks for a variety of cars at obsene prices.

As for fuel pump access, my kid's 89 Merc Tracer has a nice little cover plate in the floor directly over the fuel pump mounting on the tank. Since you may consider pulling the tank anyway, that would also be a good time to cut in an access plate in your car's floor.

FWIW, my suggestion would be to not modify it at all. Go find a Ford Ranger pickup in a salvage yard. (The small one, not the early full-size variety.) I suggest one wit a V-6 and efi. Under the driver's floor footwell, you'll find a piece of bracket-appearing steel bolted to the inboard side of the frame rail. Remove it, and you'll find the high pressure pump for the efi system. This should give you all the fuel pressure you need for the GM system.

From there, get the Moroso kit for installing the return line into your filler tube. It consists of a steel tube with a nipple welded in at an angle. Install it into the rubber portion of the fill tube, run a good quality hose from the pump to the kit, and you should be all set.
