Post subject: Gas gauge is confused.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 05, 2002 2:36 pm
My gas gauge has decided that it will show empty when it's empty and extremely empty when it's full. The mechanic told me that the gauge still works, and that the sending unit is probably bad.
Can someone tell me where the sending unit is on the '63 Valiant tank? I took out the trunk mat, but I didn't see it.

Thanks again for the help you've given me, I'd be lost without you.

The sending unit is accessed from under the car and is on the side of the tank.

The sending unit is on the front side of the tank.
Try to run the car low on fuel before removing the unit and follow the tips in the other message thread.
Once the unit is out you will most likely see that the tip of the contact is worn off and loses contact with the wire windings as it moves towards the full position. You may be able to bend the tip in a way to re-establish contact at "full".
Here is how the setup mounts into the fuel tank:

To check the gauge, ground the wire at the tank. If the gauge is ok, it will go all the way to the right. If it doesn't, the gauge OR wiring to it are bad (usually it's the gauge).
