Post subject: where do I start?
PostPosted: Tue Oct 29, 2002 10:29 am
this friday I am leaveing to pick up the car of my dreams. a 1966 dart GT 6 with a 4 on the floor. the previous owner said that he had the heads "redone" ten years ago.there is also a mild cam.he doesn't remember the #'s but he will have the papers when i get the car. there is also a 8 3/4 rear.and a new clutch. the question is what do I modify first? the rest of car is basiclly stock.he has tried a 2bbl. but the man. choke he did'n like. I have done some research and I am leaning to a keisler 5sp tranny and at some point a supercharger. I will drive the car for a short time and see if there is any glaring problems to fix first then....more speed pleeze.so good dr. where do I start spending. after the car purchase I have a kitty of 3k for the next year. headders?intake? tranny? heads?something else?

This may sound funny but the first thing I seem to do on an A-Body that I will be driving a lot, is to install anti-sway bars and stiffer torsion bars.
(this will often lead to a front suspension rebuild)

Getting the car to handle well is a must, let's face it, a car that will corner well is fun and safe to drive, even if the power is low or the brakes are "fair". Just steer it where you want to go and keep it floored.

Once you get the suspension worked-out, tires and wheels will be next. After that, exhaust mods. are a needed performance improvement.
Hope that helps.

I'm with Doug here, although I would start with bigger wheels/tires and then move on to sway bar, followed by front suspension changes. Front disc brakes are also an awesome improvement.

The sky is the limit on engine mods, and your 4spd gives you some freedom there. A turbo might be the easiest swap for a motor that's in decent shape with few other mods, and EFI would also go well with that. Look at Bob D's article on MP-EFI. Also check out http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html for an affordable programmable EFI computer if you like to DIY.

I just put a T5 5spd in my '64 Dart and I love it. I can give tips on adapting this to Slant/A-body's.

Have fun!

Lou
