the silver coating that i thought was polished steel on the wheel is coming off and reveling a black base. i cleaned them with one of those "orange action" cleaners. crap, what is that topcoat and how can i restore the original finish?

You probably know by now it's paint. The Mopar restoration suppliers like Year One and Paddock will carry the correct color. Ford dealerships used to carry Argent Silver in a rattle can that was a perfect match, don't know if they still have it. Some parts stores carry wheel silver in a rattle can, it may be a close match.

Cecil's got it. I bought some neat Silver paint from my local Auto Paint shop that is more durable than the usual rattle can stuff. I tryed a patch last month on a peice of scrap metal and I can't hardly scuff it with my keys. Wish it was warmer in Oregon, I have 4 Rallyes I had glass blasted and want to paint them....

You could also get them powdercoated for more permanency...but please promise you won't "color match" them to your car...the local junkyard has a set of nice powdercoated rallyes for sale, no acorns, but they a nice Baby crap Brown powdercoat......to match the Brown Dart they came in on...

Rustolium Dual Aluminum rattle can paint is close.

It was a perfect match for the argent on the trunk lid trim panels on my 68 Barracuda
