Hey fellas
I have a 63 Dodge Dart GT
What disc conversion kit should I use for the front brakes?
I may need a new engine.
What size engine could I fit in the bay?
Thanks :)

Sounds like fun.

Regarding the disc swap, can you tell us more how you are going to use the car and what is your budget?

If you are asking about an engine besides a Slant 6, then perhaps you want to ask over on FABO? We can help you with how to upgrade or rebuild your Slant 6 engine.

Thanks and all the best,

Lou

The current drums arent very responsive to say the least lol
I was just looking to upgrade the front brakes for safety.
Decent price and quality.
How much should that job run? 1000?

In regards to the engine- if I had to replace the engine in thr future, I'm just wondering what would fit in the bay.
Maybe something light with a lot more horse
Thanks

$1000 is a decent budget, although if you are having someone else do the work that will be tight. I would look at the stage I or stage II kits from DoctorDiff.com.

Thinking mostly safe (and not all out performance)?
Thinking mostly stick with 4" bolt pattern wheels so you do not have to modify the rear end to match a 4 1/2" bolt pattern wheel?

Consider the following lower cost ($500) Scarebird kit for a 63 to 66 Dart/Valiant/Cuda:
https://scarebird.com/index.php?route=p ... uct_id=144

Nothing likely out there for 13 inch wheels so 14 inch wheels x 5 wide are the smallest that will likely fit with discs if your on a budget. Those same wheels will bolt onto your rear end. And you need tires to match the wheels. So tire costs and wheel costs could be likely added to the brake costs if your car presently has 13 inch wheels.

I used these on my 65 Dart & my daughter's 65 Dart and they are significantly better than the original 9 inch drums.

Not likely to be near the cost of 15 inch x 4.5 bolt pattern wheels with 11 inch disc kits since going that way also could effect costs getting the rear end to accept 4 1/2 inch pattern wheels.

Good info from DonPal there. You can stay with 4" bolt circle, although the 4" bolt circle is very limiting in terms of wheel and tire choices. Better tires are probably more important than switching to disc brakes, IMHO.

Personally, I would convert to 4.5" bolt circle as you can get tons of lightweight wheels for cheap and much, much better tires than 13" or 14". I have run 16X7.5" Ford Ranger/Explorer wheels from around 2000, and I open up the center register about 0.040-0.060" to fit the Mopar hub. Stock Mopar 15X7" steel rims work well also and should be pretty easy to find.

Yes, you would want to convert the rear axle to 4.5" bolt circle as well. That is a different discussion.

Great information guys
Thank you

So the car is already equipped with 14" tires
I dont need anything fancy or high performing.
Just safe and easy to install
With the least amount of modifications lol

OK, maybe Scarebird is best. I have never used those kits, but have heard they work fine.

Do you have dual master cylinder now?

If not then you might want to consider getting one (sized for the front disc brakes) installed at the same time you are changing the front brakes so any bleeding needed would also bleed the master cylinder. It's also a chance to make you brakes safer in case of a failure in one system (like the rear only).

An adjustable proportioning valve in the line would allow you to dial in the front disc and rear drum brakes for your tire combo so that when you get on the brakes the front and rear tires lay the same amount of rubber stripes down on the road......think safety on stopping.
