I think the gears broke inside the odometer & trip odometer in the speedo cluster for my 1991 Ram Van. I think this is a electrically driven (not cable) semi-smart unit. Has anyone ever opened something like this, possible to fix?? I've been inside the 1975's speedo with no problems, but before I pull and trash this one I thought I'd ask for coaching? :(

Not the exact answer that you are looking for, but I have an electronic speedo from a 91 D150 in the dash of the
83 D150 that I got from a pull a part. When I tested it I found the odometer was not working.
Upon a recommendation from someone from this forum I sent it to Delux Speedometers in Denver Co.
They repaired it and it has worked fine. So yes they are repairable.

I got some good insight into the 1988-1992 Dodge speedometers from Tacoma Speedometer. These models have electronics inside them, so when the odometers fail, they often take out some of the electronics also. The good news is that it is all fixable, as these guys at Tacoma Speedometer say they do "about 10 a month"! Phone estimate was $120-$180 to repair. I intend to get this fixed as soon as I find my 'round tuit.

Found my 'round tuit. Took the speedo assembly to Tacoma Speedometer. For about $200.00 they fixed the odometers and calibrated the pointer. Everything works, and better. The speed reading used to be off by about 3 MPH, but now only 1 MPH as near as I can tell from our street-side digital radar read-outs. Repair took about 3 days. I'm a happy camper.
