Nice! Looks like the gas I drained from my brother's 74 Duster. That gas has been powering my pressure washer for over a year now. :lol:

The body on that fish looks good! Makes me miss my old 66. :(

the rebuild kit for the 8.75 center section came in,, so got started on that part of the project.

Got the cone sure grip re assembled

on this particular unit the cones had not bottomed out,, but when checked with modeling clay they were within .012 of doing so,,, I had the ends cut .030

To install the carrier bearings I heated them in a toaster over to about 300F,, gave then an hour heat soak after they were at 300F
the hub side went on with a single rap of a hammer.
the gear side took several hits with a BFH to seat,, probably due to a difference in the tolerance stack up.

for info on the cone sure grip,, I have a 1968 Motors manual, that has a exploded view and torque targets for the cone sure grip assembly bolts.

This posting from FABO was also helpful..the FABO posted is much more aggressive with the cone trimming than was,, I think he is giving away locking surface on the cone OD..

assembled the 742 center section yesterday

first time that I had done a differential, from a lot of internet reading the 4 key conditions are:
* pinion bearing pre load, measured in inch-lb and controlled by shims,
* pinion bearing depth, controlled by a spacer / shims between the pinion and inside bearing
* carrier bearing preload,, controlled by the side rotary adjustors
* ring and pinion backlash, controlled by moving the carrier

Installed new bearings, races and pinion seal. The OE shim thickness for the pinion bearing preload changed quite a bit with the new bearings, after trying a couple selections of shims, got it to settle in a 20 in'lb. With a 15 to 25 in/lb spec. I reused the OE (stamped 1968) gear set, had a conversation with Dr Diff (Cass) he recomended that I ignore the gear tooth imprints and re use the OE pinion bushing. He says the gear imprint charts are for new gears,,.
I tried gear lash setting from .008 to .020,, did not change the gear imprint results,, Dr Diff recommended .012 to .014 back lash on used sets, and that is where I put it.
I'll find out this spring how if the used gear set howels,, if it does I feel confident that I could disasseble this unit, install new gears and set it up to match a gear chart. And that is what this exersize was all about. :D

got the 7.25 rear end out today,,disconnecting the brake lines, e brake junction all went well,,
even the two bolts that hold the head pipe to the exhaust manifold flage loosened without much fuss,,

installing the new bake lines will be next...

most troublesome part was the passenger side upper control arm,,
the eccentric bolts were froze in the bushings,, soaked em in penetrating oil for weeks,, beat on em with a hammer,,they were both stuck.
ended up using a sawsall to slice through the bolts,,

the pasenger side motor mount looks to be shot, so will change those out,
along with replacing the radiator hoses and water pump,,

I seen one of these round glass the other week over in brazil. Sits in a back yard and looks a lil rough. Nothing compared to what you have John. Ill see if I can get pics of the one in brazil.

spent the day putting parts back on the 68 Barracuda,, lot more fun than breaking stuff loose..pressing out and in bushings...

installed:
rear leaf springs
rebuilt manual steering box
fast ratio pitman and idler arms,, picked up from Rob S
new master cylinder
inline tube brake lines
passenger side control arms and torsion bar

plan for tomorrow is to finish the install on the front suspension,
I want to finish the change out on the front E brake cable before re installing the steering column..

plan is to go through the suspension and brakes to get the car drag strip driveable for 2015,
For the engine, I only planned to install a HEI and headers and a super six intake - carb,,
the project is going along really well and I ended up pulling the motor, got the head off and at a machine shop to have milling done to raise compression.
Think by Sunday I can be pulling the bottom end apart,,,,

been fun :D

super gunky motor..in the photos looking into the bottom of the oil pan, look and you will see the impression of the oil pick up in the sludge,, build up in the timing chain - cover was 1/4 to 3/8,,
gunk and crud everywhere..

date on the block is
PT 225 T 2667

the car is titled and built as a 68,,the title has the car sold new in June of 68,
maybe an early built car, or maybe not the oe motor, who knows,???
67 - 68 was the change for the crank register, I'll measure that tomorrow.

confirmed that this 68 Barracuda has a 68 truck motor in it with a large crank register, and the tranny is a 67 or older small register ,,
who knows what goes on with these cars over the years..
I have a torque converter adapter on order.

got the 8.75 rear set, it is a 3:55 ratio with a cone style sure grip.
said to have come from a 69 Dart,, I rebuilt the differential with new bearings and seals, re-newed the cone surfaces in the sure grip.
This is my first shot a re building a rear end assembly,, I'll know later this spring how I did.

went with the Dr Diff rear disk brake and the 73+ front disk set.
have not ran the hydraulic lines to them, but the brake install is about done.

Is that the 11.7" rear disc kit with Cobra calipers from Dr. Diff? I am looking at that one myself. Any comments/impressions so far?

I have the 10.7 rear disk kit,, cobra calipers and toyota cressada rotors, the bracket that packages those together on an 8.75 is really slick, compact, a nice piece,, the mounting fastners and hoses are all high quality.
Dr Diff is ez to work with, seems to be a car nut like those on this forum,, I also bought the parts to rebuild the 8.75 center section from him,, had good pricing,, fast shipping,,always answered the phone or e mail promptly when questions arose.
