what mods would you all recommend to do on a 65 barracuda to improve handleing other than just sway bars??

I presume you already have a set of Addco sway bars or equivalent? Just wanted to make sure.

The two other most important mods are probably shocks (I use KYB's on my Dart) and tires. Exactly what to go with depends on how much you want to spend. I use 50-series Yokohama AVS Intermediates on my Dart, which on 16" wheels cost me about $500. They'd probably be a little cheaper for 15" wheels. If you want to get really obsessive, you could put on some sort of R-compound (but still DOT legal) autocross tires, like Yokohama A032R's, Hoosiers, or Kuhmo Victoracers. They're about as close as you can get to road race slicks on the street. Some of those tires offer in excess of 1.0g of lateral grip.

You can also put on stiffer springs. I'd go with 0.870" or 0.890" front torsion bars and 6-leaf station wagon springs from ESPO. Polyurethane bushings are availible from Energy Suspension. There's a trick with Moog (rubber) offset upper control arm bushings to get more caster.

For the truly obsessive, you can gusset the K-member, install Magnum Force tubular upper control arms, weld in subframe connectors and an 8-point roll cage, etc.

I'd suggest first, see if you can find some hydraulic Koni shocks. They are adjustable, and firm, but not to the point of being harsh. I am told they are even rebuildable, though I ve never worn one out, or had one fail. Next, would be bigger dia., wider wheels and tires. Aluminum wheel have the advantage of lower unsprung weight. If the suspension has already been rebuilt, then maybe bigger dia. torsion bars. T-bars from a 340 A-body are a good compromise. 383 bars are stiffer, yet. 76 Police are the biggest OEM bars.

I use KYBs on my Dart also, and they have been on there for over 15 years. The part numbers are in the database.

It seems KYB's are very popular. They are, without question, a good quality, economical shock. But like most gas shocks, they tend to be quite harsh. In my humble opinion, an A-body, especially with HD suspension pieces, does not need anything harsh. On unenven road surfaces (real life), something too stiff and/or too harsh translates into bump steer, and loss of adhesion. The compliant but firm control afforded by a quality shock, such as, but not limited to, a Koni is welcome on short jaunts as well as long trips. For me, it is worth it, even at five times the price of a KYB. Were I younger, I might opt for the KYB's, too. But when you get as old as me, ride is important, too.
