Post subject:  new cam, low compression

ok gasket matched the intake exhaust and head to match. and installed a clifford 264H cam. i aligned the timing gears with the dots per the fsm but for some reason i can't get it to crank even though i've set and reset the timing. Upon testing compression i found they all have between 75 and 80psi. What did i do wrong?

Well its not what you did ...but what you did not do. You failed to degree the cam. Lining up the dots is a crapshoot.

The 264H is a hydraulic cam I think....do you have a hydro motor?

Part 2 is: when you go to a bigger cam you really need to increase compression ratio to get full effect. A 264 duration cam is not such a huge deal,,,,but you would get more power by upping the CR a little.

ah. well then im off to search for how to degree a cam now. I remember seeing the topic come up awhile back. thanks

Sort out Hydrolic cam issue first. Then do a valve lash per FSM or the procedure outline here in the engine section.

the motor had mechanical lifters in it when i tore it down. But im not sure if the 77 is supposed to be hydrolic or mechanical. I did get the compression up to 110 though by advancing the cam about 10 degrees. i couldn't find a dial indicator so i had to do it by jumping teeth and seeing where the compression was.

The -77 is not hydraulic... but some one might have swapped in a later engine, I figure...Do your rocker arms have the adjusting screws?

Anyway, if it had solid lifters in it, it MIGHT be a solid engine

I think there may be problems with what your trying to do. I have never run a H cam on a solid engine but it seems there was some things that had to be done. One thing right off is the rockers may be to tight. Moving the cam one tooth is not a good way to aproach this. Something else is the oiling. You need to research this because it may not last even if you do get compression, but like I said I am not sure. If it was a solid setup you would be much better off to have gone with a solid cam.

I am sure there are some that know the anwsers to all this, maybe they will come in with some info.

the motor is a 77 it's in a 66. But as far as oiling i know the rockers are getting oil to them and they have adjusting screws. i do know that the head is a 79 because i pulled it from the car myself from a 79 volare. And correct me if i'm wrong but shouldn't the motor have a higher compression with the 264H over the stock?

-edit the motor is not hydraulic. will it work if i get the mechanical lifters? or do i need somehting else?

Get a mechanical cam and lifters.

Check the deck height and the combustion chamber size. Chances are your static compression ratio is below 8:1 and with a 264 cam I'd shoot for a minimum of 8.5:1, but 9:1 would be better.

The later the intake valve closing the lower the cranking compression all else being equal.

Nothing makes for a lazy engine like a long duration cam and low compression ratio. Been there, done that.

You might get it to run with the existing cam, but it won't be right. The ramp profiles on a hydraulic cam are different from a cam intended for solid lifter use.

sounds like i need to get ahold of the folks at clifford and see whats up. When i ordered the cam i talked to Larry(i think) and told him what i was doing and what i was planning on running. Sounds like he didn't sell me the right cam even though i told him what motor i had. From the chart comparing block and head variations the only motors that were hydraulic were from 1980 on. Any chance i'll get any customer service when i try and talk to the guys.

Hello,

Although I know I wasn't the first, I had a hydro cam in a solid lifter block and got good advice from DD and others. New pushrods, too. Check thread in about tghe summer of '06, I believe was the time frame. It will work just fine if you adjust lash. Seems to me rather than 10 adn 20 it was 8 and 18.

That was your first mistake. Larry is relatively clueless when it comes to Slants. He sold you what he had laying around, especially if it didn't take 6 months to get it. :?

so all i need to do to run the cam for the time being is to swap to mechanical lifters and adjust the lash a bit tighter than normal or am i missing something here?
