I have a Holley 1920 that seems to be getting to much of a shot from the accelorator pump. How does moving the rod around to the other holes in the throttle shaft effect the shot? I give it some gas at idle and can see a plume of black smoke right after that. I have a #59 jet if that makes a difference.

You want to position the rod in a hole that is closer to the throttle shaft. This will give you less of a pump shot.

What above Mitch Said - gives pump arm less travel = less pump shot BUT it'd be having to put a ton of extra gas in winging the throttle to get puff black smoke other than laying down of revs or response.
IF you or someone has put a kit through that holley 1920 around '63,'64,'65 there was about 4 carb variants or rather 4 kit variants ALL had DIFFERENT main accel pump gasket with important holes in different places & some with different length account p pump shafts for 1 year model 1920 ( only discovered when another shop thought they'd "offload" their problem child carb "for a tune up" in the disguised hope i'd fix their true problem: only by compairing my FULL range of Hygrade Kits all laid out, did i discover, not stated in books the peculiar to that 1/2 year model '64 i think slant 170 that i discovered the oddball account l pump gasket ( incl pinhole leak)
Suggest you order in walker or Hygrade kit going off stamped carb # for above pitfall too.
All the best. Love an EFI Technichian to sort that one!.
