I have 1965 Dodge Coronet with Slant 6....
Alternator (rebuilt) went out. Siezed up (I suspect it was not installed snug (previous owner)

I purchased a rebuilt alternator.
Works find but not snug instalation-moves side to side...

The metal sleeve ferrule that goes over the attachment bolt was too big to use. Would not go
in. The spacers provided with alt are also too big.

Is there a source for the ferrule sleeves that go over the bolts?

Is there a source for re built alternators that actually fit snug?

Please respond to: cbladey@bcpl.net

I am in Maryland.

Looking for others in maryland with like cars...

The sleeves pressed into the alternator are moveable if the spacer won't fit.

If by side-to-side, you mean fore and aft, you might be bottoming out the bolt. Try putting a couple of washers under the bolt head and see if it will draw down.

-Sleeve is too large in diameter to go through holes in support bracket.
-I will try examining the bolt but I remember it had plenty of thread.

Trouble is as I recall that nut gets as tight as possible but casting will not pull in tight.
I tried putting a washer in on other side of bracket but not enough room. I could try a thinner washer.
The spacers provided by the remanufacturer are too thick to fit in.
Movement is not so much front back as on diagonal.

Will check bolt again....any more suggestions?
I could also use a source for a good remanufactured alternator or an original which can be fixed....

I have 1965 Dodge Coronet, Slant six 225.

There are different mounting methods, but they all work out the same way. My '64 slant has a cast bracket that fits between the alternator mounting holes. My '66 V8 has a combination of spacers and brackets, while my '79 slant has a formed-metal bracket that fits the same as my '64. All the alternator castings are identical.

It sounds like you are missing the pressed-in split sleeve in the rear mounting hole. The hole in the rear of the casting is larger than the front for every old alternator I've seen, and the split sleeve goes in there. It moves so you can draw the bolt tight, no matter how it's mounted.

Since the castings are all the same, any source is as good as the next, as far as fit is concerned.

Dang, I thought I had the only 65 Coronet in the country.
I think GaryS is right. I put a rebuilt Alt on my Coronet about a month ago. It was a perfect match. Might try getting your parts store to look in another box.

Nope! I am in Maryland! It is running quite well. Anyone in Maryland?
Anyway....the sleeve which came with the alternator did not fit into the rear hole. This was a long sleeve that goes all the way from bracket to bracket. When I took the old one off there was a very short sleeve -half inch or so...
The sleeve does not help the bolt to tighten so much as to keep it from wobbling as the bolt is smaller than the diameter of the casting.

I tried to fit the bolt back into the short casting but it would not go back in. Perhaps pressed to hard and bent tighter when squeezed
to be pressed in....this I lost and am still looking for it.

Seems to me that what I need is a sleeve that will go through the bracket casting and around the bolt. Anyone know the specs of the bracket? Anyone know who sells sleeves? I should think that sleeves are fairly generic and someone must make them in various diameters and thicknesses. It would just then be a matter of cutting one to the right length and then pressing it in.

This would not come up with the original part as they fit exactly and did not require sleeves.

Yes! I have thought of going back to the parts store however, with such a first error I think I need another parts source. One problem may be that they do not make a remanufactured for 65 and that a next best was substituted.

So I need a good source for 65 rebuilds, a 65 part to have rebuilt or a retrofit sleeve that will slide in.

The wonderful opportunities for problem solving presented by old cars. So much fun.

If anyone is in Maryland with a close or similar car let me know. I am also searching for slant 6 or Coronet clubs in my area.

Thanks again for your wonderful help.

Conrad, you need the stock split sleeve, and it should still be available from Chrysler. If not, get one from a wrecking yard.

Sometimes they will be tight when installed in a different casting, and you might need to ream it out slightly. It won't take much.

The long sleeve is used on V8's because the bolt is threaded directly into the head instead of using a bracket and nut.

The reason your '65 is not listed in the catalog is because they are dummies about Mopar stuff. Physically, all standard-rated alternators are the same dimension and will interchange.

The only practical differences are amperage ratings that can be different, but the ratings do not affect how it mounts in your car. Even newer alternators with dual fields can be used in your car.

Most re-builders sell to many suppliers, so you will probably have the same alternator in a half-dozen stores in your area. I am usually happier with NAPA because they don't hassle you and probably offer the best selection of parts for older cars. Just make sure you talk to one of the older guys at the counter.
