I bought the FELPRO kit for the entire engine; do they measure up as far as manifold gasket quality?

Poorly. It is very much worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and intake-to-exhaust junctions.

(unless you want to do the job again and still not have it seal…and again and still not have it seal…and again and still not have it seal…)

Getting ready to reassemble my slant; things are looking good. After all this work and once the engine is freshly painted and installed I would like to avoid any leaks as much as possible to keep it looking nice. I have been searching through old threads on here identifying weak spots where leaks happen; so far the pass rear cornerat the lifter bore area and the alternator bolt holes; are there any other areas I need to pay attention to?

The "Bermuda Triangle", that is the right front corner of the oil pan.

can anyone give some tips/insights into the best ways from experience in making sure these dont leak? On the pass rear block corner where they leak on the lifter bore area do you torque down the head as normal and then at black RTV on the rear as well as the side of that corner, and if so how long of a "bead"?
Also looking for inputs on getting the near rear main rope seal installed properly so that it doesnt leak; I have only used 1 piece seals in the past.

My advice on the rear main seal: use a 2-piece rubber seal, not a rope seal. Make sure you install the halves right way round (lip pointing in, not out) and offset the halves slightly with respect to the edges of the upper and lower housing. Put a small dab of good quality RTV on the ends of one of the halves.

"good quality" on the RTV is super important. I can make a hell of a mess with any brand you happen to slap into my hand, but I can make a good and durable seal with Chrysler's own Mopar ATF RTV or Valco Cincinnati's aluminum RTV. Also for the "Bermuda triangle" area.

Block-to-head seal: four or five thin coats of Copper Coat on each side of the head gasket. Allow each coat to dry before spraying the next one.

On the Engine FAQ page there’s a link to an article titled “Oil pan installation “.
I found this information to be most valuable when I put stuff back together after replacing the sloppy 42 year old Timing chain on the slant in my pickup.
I’m glad i had the instructions to rely on. Opening the box of gaskets I had to wonder where all this fit in. Theyre not like any pan gaskets I’d seen before. I couldn’t be happier with the results! Three-plus months later and no leaks. Check the FAQ, you’ll be glad you did.

Will do; thanks for the tip.
I also tried to buy the suggested hex head exhaust manifold bolts from McCarthy Carr but they won’t ship to Canada so I guess I will be using stock replacement studs and nuts.

So I ran into a snag today; got the rod bearings finally for my engine; the crank had the rod bearings 0,010 undersized from the factory. I confirmed the rod journals were all the same which they were, and they were all 0.010 undersized.
The crank and cam are in and are fine; installed the pistons and I have a problem. With the rod bearing nuts just snug, the whole engine turns nicely with a breaker bar on the end of the crank. If I torque any of the rod caps to spec (45 ft lbs) the engine basically seizes.
I thought perhaps the undersized bearings were wrong, so I pulled the front rod cap and checked it with plasti gauge; it reads 0.0015 which is on the high end of spec, which means it should be fine.
Any suggestions out there before I go back to trying to figure out what the issue is again tomorrow?

What's on the rod/main bearings as far as lube?

Just noticed this. I agree, if using the OEM steel shim gasket. If using the felpro head gasket, install without using any sealer.

RE: RODS
I always install one rod/piston assy, torque, and rotate. That way if there is a problem, I know where it is. Might be a stupid question, but the rod caps, are with the rods they came from, correct? Also installed the correct way (notch to notch).
