hi being a new member on slantsix.org (pls find the "introduction" here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=61615) i would not hesitate to bother you all with my very first question(s) on this board.

it´s about: how to hook up a manual choke cable to an aftermarket remanufactured carb ?? why using an remanufactured carb from rockauto.com .. coz it´s the easiest way to get a usable alternative i acceptable quality over here in Germany.

the old carb was mutilated by one of the previous owners. Idle screws are not longer there also the choke linkage was taken away - it´s just simply the choke cable hooked direktly to the choke plate lever and the idle mixture screws set a point the will run, throttle butterflies are more or less adjusted by setting the throttle cable at a decent tension.

so thing running pretty well for what is left of it, but as its getting colder each day now.. i decided to throw a replacement unit from rockauto.com in.

i tried to find pictures or hints how to hook up a manual choke to a BBD unit, but thanks to photobucket etc and their new rules of no longer supporting pics on forum boards... there is pretty nothing to find out there.

so my question(s) will be:
(and i really hope the specialists here can/will help me)

- can i simply hook that cable to the attaching point on the choke lever, where the original choke linkage from an electric or manifold heat triggered choke normally is attached ??
from my point of understanding i´m just simulating a choke linkages work by pulling and pushing the choke cable, right ?

- will the "choke dash pot pull of "thing still work, will it be functional or do i have to unhinge that thing ?

- will the fast idle and curb idle thing work ? if not i think i have to find a way to get an electic choke set and ditch the manual choke plan

Is the choke "stove" still on the motor? The easiest way to fix it might be to hook up the automatic choke linkage, even if you have to replace anything missing or broken.

There are manual choke carburetors and automatic choke carburetors. The main difference aside from the choke cable connection is that the fast idle cam for a manual choke is a ramp rather than being stepped. I would suggest repairing the automatic choke if that is the type of carburetor you have. I can't say whether or not the choke pull-off would function with whatever manual-activation-kludge you develop. You can also go with an electric choke to replace the exhaust manifold mounted bi-metallic spring and rod. One thing though. There are Autolite carburetors and Carter BBD carburetors, both distinctly different. Once you positively ID the carburetor someone here can steer you towards the correct retrofit electric choke system or towards parts to repair the original type automatic choke. A distant third option would be to get you a manual choke carburetor.

and i see, that it will not make sense to play around and try to get something to work, which is not intented for it... so i think i will try to get the Electric Choke Kit you recommended Dan.
