Actually, I probably should check the timing chain at some point. Just don't have the time/money to pour into a "drive to the dump sometimes" truck right now

Well, a week later, and it still happens when it warms up. Also have a terrible rattling coming from the clutch area, and the throwout bearing sounds like hell, so I wonder if it's just something in there... Only rattles at like 2300-2400RPM. Could be the timing chain. If I ever do figure it out, I'll let you know - at the moment I'm just going to be driving it until I have some time/money again. Timing chain will be one of the first to get replaced when that happens, or at least the tensioner.

I would guess either torque converter to flexplate bolts, OR (worse) the flexplate to crankshaft bolts. Both will make a rattle at different RPMs. 1st is easy to fix (Loctite), and 2nd requires removal of the transmission and torque converter to access those bolts. Plenty of torque and Loctite on the bolts in either case.

No torque converter, it's an A833, but good info nonetheless. The bottom of the bell housing is missing and my bearings are garbage so I'm sure there's something rattling, I'll look up in there later today and see if I can see anything. It rattles like crazy in neutral but I thought it was coming from a different spot than the engine rattle I thought I was hearing... maybe not.

when I got the 83' D150 from my Dad, the truck had been parked in his garage for a couple of years and I remember there was quite a bit of gear rattle with the tranny in neutral. After I changed the tranny fluid and put some miles on it the noise subsided some.

When I rebuilt the truck I had the A833 rebuilt by Brewers, it is fine now.

I just put some thicker gear oil in there (ATF was leaking like crazy) but it still seems like it's getting louder - hopefully it keeps going for a bit, not sure I could handle rebuilding a transmission with everything else going on right now

Did yours rattle in gear at all? I can hear it now when decelerating in second as well.

I started driving the 83 D150 in 2008, so it has been a while ago, I remember some gear rattle in neutral, and an occasional whine in first,, got a little better with a fluid change and use,,,all better after having the tranny gone through.
The drive shaft universal joints can also be a source of noises.

Ma Mopar was wise enough to recommend ATF for manual transmissions (at least the service manual says so for the A903 in 1969). It might have saved money, reduce errors in plant, and it was good for cold eather...maybe it was as efficient as manual transmission oil for the intended use and expected lifetime... go figure. I'm using light manual transmission oil, not ATF on mine. (note: the OP stated few posts ago he has an A-833...)

Pretty much that summed it up, considering that they were still using it through the 70's...but your drivetrain warranty was only 3/30 at that time...
after that they were off the hook if you kept your car around for another 7/70... (my parents rigs both lasted about 15/150..but my grandfather changed
the lube to 90 wt in both rigs...)

I only use 90 Wt GL-4, it's a little stiff in winter weather...but at least it coats the gears and stays there... I have a mainshaft from a 1976 A-833OD
where the nose has been badly galled by the rollers it sat in... when I pulled that case apart because it rattled, and the synchros failed to do their job...I
found the case was full of ATF and it wasn't sticking like syrup on anything, it just coated and drained...

Yeah, ATF didn't do me much good either. It was probably an upgrade from what the former owner was using - air - but I switched it out for gear oil after a couple of days. Now it's a little tough to shift until it gets hot, then it's better than it ever was before, other than the death rattle. I don't understand how a transmission can make such horrible noises and still shift so well. Whatever works, I guess.
