Hey Slant Brothers, my 66 dart sedan, which I had a complete engine rebuild 3 years ago, has been running rich for awhile. I have put about 5000 miles on the rebuilt engine, I get lots of carbon blackness out of the tailpipe, but does thin out after it is warmed. On a whim I bought a pint of Sea Foam, and I wonder if any of you have tried it? I have seen differing techniques on using it, some people pour it down the carb, other suck it into the intake vacuum hoses, others pour into the gas tank. Also will it require me to replace the sparkplugs? Meaning will they become fouled?

Sounds like your choke is sticking on, or is adjusted too rich, &

Also it could be that the float in the carb is part of the problem.

Sea Foam will remove gum and varnish, But nether of those issues usually cause a carb to run rich.

What carb is on the engine right now?

I have used sea foam as a fuel stabilizer as well as a diesel fuel injector cleaner (mixed with M.M. Oil) but never used it on a gas engine, for cleaning the fuel system...

Sea Foam was made for 2 cycle boat motors

Sea Foam has it's place under certain circumstances, though with what you are dealing with, sounds like Jase is pointing you in the right direction. Sea Foam will not cure a rich running engine.

It has been running rich for a year. I just leaned it out, so now my thinking is to clean out any carbon buildup from the pistons. So that is why I got the Sea Foam. I am just wondering if it is going to ruin my spark plugs. I am not thinking Sea Foam is going to fix the Rich issue, I adjusted the carb for that. Has anyone here ever tried it on the Slant?

I have never used Sea Foam. I have used Marvel Mystery Oil because it is a slow cleaner. I have run it in the fuel tank and oil crankcase without any issues.

In those 3 years and 5000 miles, what have you done to lean it out and fix it? I see, you've done nothing! Why? Maybe because your lazy? Sure, go ahead and piss your money away on something that won't work on a fairly fresh motor. Some people just have more money then sense! Good Luck

I wouldn't worry about too much buildup. But if you already have the Sea Foam and want to run it, you aren't going to hurt anything. It won't ruin your spark plugs, just follow the directions on the can and you'll be just fine.

I agree that it won't hurt the spark plugs... Give the sea foam a try and let us know if you notice a substantial improvement in how the engine performs.

I used the sea foam on a heavily gunked up slant and it did clean it up some, judging by the size of the chunks coming out of the oil pan when I changed the oil.
