I picked up a 225 slant6 engine that has mismatched parts, block is a 1969-70, head is a 1964-66, it has an electronic dist... and my >guess< is that the head has had a valve job done at some time in its past, just based on its' age. However, I do not know if the head has had the OEM soft exhaust valve seats replaced with hardened ones. Because >if< it has had the seats replaced w/hard before, I'd rather not pay to have them replaced again...(unless of course they need to be). My plan is to >use< this engine in a truck, no once a month babying...so I think it needs the hard seats...
So my question is: How do I check for hard valve seats?

You should be able to see them. They are a ring shaped insert that is machined into the head. They will be a somewhat different color than the original head.
