That is a link to the video of the slant 6 in my truck.

The background:
Hand built the slant, had a machine shop cut it .040” over, Keith black pistons, comp cams mild cam put in. Holley 2300 carb on a 2 bbl intake. I did the head myself, built the bottom end myself and used lots of Autozone parts on the outside. I put about 2500 miles on it and although I was dancing around it having a proper tune it was running well enough. Decided to add power brakes. On the test drive, cruising along at 40mph which was the speed limit(ish), she cuts out and stalls on me. Fought with it in the raid for 4 hours, got it to start and did 5-7 mph all the way home. Above 7 it shut off, below 5 it shut off and I had to have idle set in the 1900-2000 range to even get that. Got home, rain stopped about 3 hours later, I go outside and start it up, that’s the sound it has made ever since.

What I’ve done:
I removed the oil pan, which involved cutting the oil pickup on a truck, it was rubbing the crankshaft as it turns out. Reengineered the wheel, didn’t fix the problem. Negligible play on the bearings, connecting rods and cylinder walls looked good from the bottom, still didn’t fix the problem. Took the rebuilt head off, put on an old one that was about to be bound for the scrap yard, still same sound. Been through absolutely every piece of the engine and there is nothing that could cause it to either have to idle so high or make that god forsaken sound.

I’m having difficulty getting it to run since the last bout with the intake manifold and headers. I don’t know why but the manifolds suddenly don’t want to seal on this head. But aside from that, even after I get it running I’ve still got that sound. Any ideas?

It sounds deep from the video, but that could be deceiving. Did the torque convertor bolts come loose? Or if it is a manual, the flywheel bolts?

It does sound like it is at crankshaft speed, so I agree that the engine to trans connection is a good step since you have checked the rotating assembly.

I wonder if you may have two problems at once. Maybe a vacuum leak in the new power brakes? That might help explain why it doesn't want to run either.

That is the exact scenario on my first truck, the flexplate bolts had loosened and were just lightly hitting the dust shield. Sounded for all the world like a rod knock.

We had a Cadillac in which the flex plate was still bolted to the torque converter lugs, but the lugs were no longer attached to the converter.

Was able to get that rewelded with just the access panel removed...………….

This was my thought as well.
