The thin plate that covers the flywheel to flex-plate connection is making noise at low RPM and vibrating bad at high RPM. I have taken it off and on about 5 times now, trying to flatten it out, or bend it so it shouldn't rub. There's just very little clearance. At one attempt it the nut on the flex plate actually hit the metal cover's edge. It didn't sound good, but I had unplugged the coil so it only hit once or twice as I fired it. I am thinking to just modify the thing so that it sits out further somehow. Any thoughts?

You checked all the other fasteners, right? Torque converter bolts are tight? Any movement on the rotating parts? It should not be that tight on clearance. Just thinking about what might be wrong.

Everything seems pretty tight. Kinda driving me nutz

I don't use those covers. Then again I also don't do much off roading so I don't have a concern about foreign material getting up in there.

Nut on the flexplate? I'm guessing you mean bolt head? Is this a 904 or a 727? I've never had a 904 cover bend bad enough to hit the converter bolts.

Pull the plate, look for the witness marks, and knock the dents out. :D

Starter shim / shield??

A long shot but you never know.

I once saw a 225 with enough crank end-play that torque converter bolts would hit the starter plate when the throttle was snapped open.

Seen the same. Happened to Neil's engine in that 73 Dart.

I just had to bend the inspection cover out so that it was away from the bolts. The other clanking was a loose motor mount nut. I got those taken care of then drove it around town pretty easily, did push it up to 50 slowly, then quickly, and it was running great. I took it by the machine shop that had been giving me advice here and there. The mechanic said he heard a slight rod knock at high rpm, I didn't hear anything. Today I took it up to 70ish on the highway, and it started to knock. I am guessing I spun a bearing...

The knock increased in loudness when I took my foot off the pedal. It seemed to not there when the engine cooled, except when I revved it. I did have the bearings inspected/replaced by a race car mechanic no more than 50 miles ago. He was supposed to flush out the engine and replace one of the bad bearings while inspecting the others. This was half a year ago, I just haven't had the time to get this thing going. At that time, one of the crank bearings had worn due to the cap's nut falling off. (this is a junkyard engine saga that you may have seen me posting about over the past year+).

I don't really know why I am writing all of this, as I am pretty sure I know what I need to do. Hopefully nothing is too worn. Thanks again for everyone's help. I'll be back with questions about the bearings soon.

Hey I have a thought, I had a cracked flex plate on a 65 barracuda years ago, made a ton of noise. Can you check that?
