Post subject:  New 2017 NHRA helmet rule

From Gainesville Raceway web site.

Important SFI expiration that will hit January 1, 2017

Effective for the 2017 racing season, ALL helmets used at Gainesville Raceway (as well as all NHRA sanctioned facilities) must meet Snell 2010 certification. This means that all Snell 2005 helmets will no longer be accepted.
The good news is that:
1. If you are using a helmet with Snell 2005 certification, it is probably at LEAST 5 years and is well overdue for retirement.
2. Snell 2015 helmets (which are accepted and will eventually supersede 2010) have already been on the market for a while. It may be beneficial to simply upgrade to a 2015 now. These won't expire until January of 2027, although we really hope you don't wear the same helmet for 11 years...
3. You can find Snell Memorial Foundation 2010 and 2015 approved helmets for a little over $100.
4. This is for you safety. It is more than likely your family will understand an investment into your safety equipment, especially for your head.
5. Add it to your Christmas list!
Remember a Snell approved helmet is required on ALL vehicles that run 13.99 and quicker in the 1/4 mile (8.60 or quicker in the 1/8 mile). If you have any additional questions please contact us at the track or reach out to NHRA Southeast Division 2.

Usually IHRA follows NHRA. So be prepared, before the season starts.

Can helmet be open faced ?
Or do you racers only recommend full face ?
My goal is anything in the 12's in the 1/4 mile

For drag racing in your ET range, open is OK. Just an FYI. Snell 2010 and 2015 have a "M" (motorcycle) prefix, and a SA (auto sports) rating. The main difference is the type of impact resistance, and motorcycle has better side vision, and the auto sport has a fire resistant interior. Either is OK for NHRA/IHRA lower class racing. So if you are doing other then "slower class" drag racing check your sanction requirements. Personally, I would opt for a full face Snell SA 2010 or SA 2015, if you are planning on running on a regular bassis. That way you're covered into the future, even in other catagories, if you decide to step up.

So where did you guys find the best deal on your helmets? Open face for me if that's Ok.

I'm pretty sure my nice helmet that I have is fine. But it has a 2005 sticker in it. Guess I will throw it on the junk pile with all the perfectly good 5 point harness belts. :? :?

Greg, did you ask turtle about that or did he bring it up. He never even looks at my car let alone the helmet!

How about just a 2015 sticker?

Do they still have the dumb rule that you can't use an out of date 5 point harness, but are still allowed to use stock seatbelts ? (depending on how fast you're going)

If you are required to have a roll bar (based on ET, or car construction), then you need the correct dated belt/harness. If you are doing a volentary upgrade, then the belt/harness is exempted from the date rule.
