does anybody have any knowledge on recertifying safety equipment? our track is an IHRA affiliated track now and are enforcing exspire dates on safety equipment, or is it just not worth the cost and just have to replace it. |

Only things I re-cert are harness & arm restraints. Manufacturer can inspect & re-cert one time per product. Costs less than new sets. Frankly getting tired of N(o) H(ot) R(ods) A(llowed)'s money grubbing policy changes. Now running only small (actual nostalgia, not "new"stalgia) meets. Present project's a street rod again, and I'll be hawking the 'Brick. |

A few years ago my fabric supplier gifted me 10 yds of the fabric they use to make oil field fire fighter suits. The quality of the fabric was amazing. I was racing mud drags at the time. My class dictated 5 point harness, neck brace, arm restraints , and a SFI fire jacket. I used to contract sew helicopter rescue harnesses and screamer bags...... I bought the proper zips and cuffs (fire rated) and a coverall pattern in my size, Took me 2 days to sew it up. Tech refused my suit because it had no SFI badge. I got a warning. Next race same suit....SFI badge and I'm in. Following year I bought the fancy belting and hardware and made my own restraints. ....properly labelled of course. Please don't tell me whoever sewed your SFI approved $69 restraint cared more about my safety than I do.....or bought better belting. Did you know Simpson was busted for providing jackets that did not pass the basic flame test? Would you get your roll cage welded in China? Safety is not the same as regulation for profit (SFI) |

A saying I used a lot at work down through the years applies to almost everything nowadays. " Common sense shall not stand in the way of allowing us to do something stupid!" That covers a lot of ground if you think about it.

so the only way is to send the equipment back to the manufacturer ! sandy where did you get sfi badges? the biggest thing I don`t understand is only 2yrs on seat belts! |

In my opinion, some of the rules are a total joke. Terry, if I remember correctly, you are required to have a cage, and harness, so what I am going to say does not apply to you. The seat belt rule has changed for my car. At one time I had a 3 inch wide racing belt (not harness), in my 66 Cuda, that was out dated. I went to a NHRA track, and got bounced in tech. I pulled my stock 1966 (40+ year old) OEM belt from the floor in the back seat, which was legal to run. I asked the tech guy which he wanted me to use. End of conversation, ran the out dated racing belt. Some years back, the rule was changed. If you are not required to have a roll bar (which requires a racing belt/harness, you can upgrade to a racing belt/harness, and the date rule does not apply. |

I seldom read references online to what I consider the actual main reason, but feel it to be so that their rules may be applicable in the field by "non compos mentis" techs. They can't control the (lack of) rationality of tech crews in the field, so add substantial overkill to said rules to compensate. The second, obviously exacerbating the first, would be the runaway insanity of our tort system. |

The SFI badge came off an ancient fire jacket that fell apart. You can buy them (thats how manufacturers get them) I feel so much safer with an SFI badge..... |
