This is probably a question I should have asked years ago. We run a pretty big trans cooler on the LeMons Dart, which has a mostly stock 904 with a deep pan. I only say "mostly" because the valve body may have been mildly breathed-upon for firmer shifts when I had it rebuilt back in college... but I honestly don't remember. It's all stock clutch packs, no V8 guts or anything. We leave it in Drive for races. I don't think I've ever seen the trans temp get above 150 °F during a race. More often it's closer to 140. Is that too cool? |

Yes, it can be too cool. You can look up the optimal operating temp for an old school automatic, but IIRC it is 180-200 F. However, if it has lasted this many races, I might just leave everything alone! Lou |

I would be suspicious of your temp measuring system, that temp doesn't add up, Are you in Alaska? |

Yeah, I agree it does sound very low for something getting that kind of workout, even with a big cooler. Might be the sensor is bad. Are you reading temp on the fluid output of the trans or closer to the input?? You want the output... Lou |

180-200 is optimal. 160 is not unusual. I can read trans temp on my Challenger, it rarely gets above 180, and it takes quite a lot of driving to get it there. |

Also, what kind of trans fluid are you running? Some people are under the mistaken belief that Type-F fluid is "superior" -- it is not; it's an archaic fluid that is severely inferior in absolutely every performance and durability characteristic. Today's Dexron-VI handles higher temperatures than yesterday's fluids (viscosity doesn't change, varnish and sludge don't form). |

Lou Yeah, the temp sensor is mounted in the pan. I suppose that's not a very useful measurement, then. |

No, that should work, is it electrical or mechanical? Do you have access to a thermal temp gun, just read the pan when hot, it should be close/slightly lower then your gauge reading,just to verify whats going on. |

I just checked out a '10 F-150 Lariat w/the trans temp gauge function, I hit trucks and cars w/a pretty harsh road test, if it's gonna slip or shudder hot I want it to be on Me....not a customer after purchase...happened once on a Chebby to Us already( converter clutch bits plug-up the cooler). On the test (approx. 9 miles) the temp was hovering right around 150deg. when I pulled it into My bay. I wouldn't lose one millisecond of sleep over it. |
