And if you are, do you have the e-brake hooked up?

I haven't answered, but I do have a 9 inch Ford rear end in my 89 Ford van. The e-brake works just like a Mopar A body. If the cable is pulled, the shoes expand. You will probably have to play with cable length, though, if you are tyring to mate it to the factory A body e-brake system.

Reed, I don't have any of the e-brake stuff with my 9" Ford. I will have to go junk yarding to find the cables that attach to the backing plates. Other than that and a u joint this should be a fairly easy swap since I have a '57 Ford housing that sits right on the leaf springs.

Dang, I wish you would have told me. I actually managed to get some spare time and was in a junkyard last Saturday grabbing the center section out of an 86 Ford van that had a nine inch rear axle. The E brake cables were right in front of me. That being said, the nine inch axle was used in trucks and vans up until 1987, and cars up until the late 70s. These days I would look more for trucks and vans or Craigslist unless you get lucky and find a junkyard that actually has an old Ford passenger car with a nine inch axle under it.

The actual structure of the Ford nine inch axle e-brake mechanism is very very similar to that if the Mopar e-brake system. Cable pulls lever, lever forces shoes apart. In fact, I don't see why you need to actually find a nine inch rear axle. The Ford 8.8 inch axle replaced the nine inch (and there was crossover in the 80s when both were being used in the same vehicle lines in the same years of production) and the brakes were virtually identical between the two axles. 8.8s are much more common in wrecking yards these days than nine inch axles.

I already have a 1957 Ford 9". It's is the narrowest of the 9 inchers and it's spring perches are already in the right place.

My point was that the emergency brake hardware from a Ford 8.8 inch axle might also work with the brakes on a Ford 9 inch axle. I was not suggesting you go out and change your rear axle housing. I was suggesting that Ford nine inch axles are getting harder to find in junkyards and you might be able to broaden your search to other axles.

Got'cha. Like you said, trucks may be the bests source now and maybe the 8.8 stuff will work.
Thanks.
