Hi guys, I am trying to set pinion depth on a 489 casting 8.75 chrysler rear.

I have some what seem to be oem used 3.91 gear set.

The depth tool i am using has instructions to follow to check depth of pinion etc. Problem is that there are no markings or stampings on the pinion gear head.. no checking distance or no +2 or anything.

The instructions reference those numbers.

Any help or alternatives appreciated.

I have loose set-up bearings and a micrometer for setting up and taking measurements. I have done this before using the tool and it worked fine. Those gearsets probably had checking distances stamped on the pinion.

Thanks,

Greg

You may have to start with about an .090" thick shim and check your pattern. PITA, but without a reference number you're flying blind anyway.

Did you get a solid spacer kit too? That makes life a ton easier setting it up.
