I have procured a replacement speedo cable (old one gave squirrelly readings) and it is different from the OEM cable in one aspect.

The tip of the original cable (speedo end) is a pointed plastic nub about an inch long, whereas the new cable has no plastic tip but the usual steel, square drive end.
The plastic tip is non-removable as far as I can tell.
The new cable itself (without tip) is the same length as the old cable (with the tip).

Can the new cable be installed as is, without fear of failure?
The old cable lasted 34 years, so...

Thanks in advance.

Well, tried to take SS Dan's advice to ask, "is this right?" ,,,prior to doing something...

Hopefully, I won't come back and say, "I did something but something's wrong."

Plastic tip, steel tip...it's just the tip, right?

Ima cram that steel tipped, square sucker in there and go roaring down the road.
How bad could it be? HAHA!

Who needs a speedometer/odometer anyhow? Not like it's life or death or anything.

tongue meet cheek

Had to replace the cable on an 86 Camaro once. (what a pain to get the old twisted cable pieces out of the sheath)

Anyway, the original was solid, and the replacement was cut to length, then put plastic (square) tip on cable.

The original all cable piece (until it failed) worked smoother.............

I am going to view the all steel cable as an upgrade and hope it works out smoother than the plastitip.

Thanks for posting your experience.

New cable is quieter and steadier at highway speeds.
The old cable was rusted onto the trans and required some persuasion to loosen.
Never-Seized the new one in place.

Did not use a plastic tip (don't have one!), but the metal one slid right into the speedo.
Hopefully, it won't chew it up anytime soon.
I lightly lubricated the new cable with clean motor oil.

The *wrong* part is being accepted as a return by the seller, so all is well once the refund occurs.

i had a speedo cable made, same scenario. the old one had a plastic tip, new one was swedged square. the shop was EXTREMELY specific to only use white lithium grease to lube the cable.

Interesting...
I like white lithium grease except that it dries up and turns chalky over time.
In hindsight, I ought to have grabbed my bottle of BreakFree CLP, maybe.
At least it's not an expensive part.
