So from limited production test runs in 1966, part throttle became standard in 1967 and later models all the way to the end in 1987 truck. The early version module with plug and then the internal version with just steel plate. Then running production change in 78 slant got V8 valve body with external limit valve, which lasted threw 1980 model year. In 1981 back to internal steel plate version and stayed that way till end in 1987.

I can't recall driving any 67 (or 66 or 68) that actually had part throttle kickdown....

When you look at all these changes, you come to realize that almost all of them are 'tweaks' that are largely unnecessary for an old boy (or gal) to have three forward gears and one reverse.

What's frustrating about the fluid flow diagrams in many of the factory manuals is....they show the same valve positions for different actions. They just change the flow colors...but the valves themselves show no actual movement which, of course, can't be the case. If they didn't move, the flow would be unchanged.

May be a different view will help. In the word valve use the letter L as a reference point to see movement left or right, port open or closed.

I don't mean every diagram, but many of them.

Flow diagrams and text explanations could have been better. Having all the info and historical time line in one book would have been nice. That,s what has been attempted here. The field service manuals, especially the AMC- jeep manual could have been better. Because of poor info the limit valve got a new name,PTK, It is assumed that ptk makes part throttle down shift happen. http://www.moparchat.com/forums/perform ... using.html

The limit valve is there to prevent part throttle down shifts at higher speeds. The ones with just steel plates have part throttle down shift function at higher speed.

That's interesting as I've always considered the limit valve 'block' the identifier of whether the trans has part throttle kickdown or not. As mentioned, I've never driven a Torqueflite that exhibited part throttle kickdown if it didn't have that block.

Kickdown, and downshifting in general, is the Achilles Heel of the automatic transmission in my opinion. Everyone focuses on upshifts, but no one looks at downshifts. I'm sooooo sick of slowing for a corner at 5MPH and having the trans stay in a higher gear than it should so the car is boggy until you get some speed back up. This is a characteristic of almost every auto trans car I drive, old or new.

Mopar's Torqueflite is legendary for all the right reasons but kickdown is not one of its strong suits. As a minimum, the 'push' instead of 'pull' (like a Chevy TH) has made it a PITA to connect the kickdown and resulted in plenty of burned up transmissions.
