In the 1/4 and by how much do you think?
A) a 904 with the a998 lower 1st and 3.23's
or
B) man 4speed with OD and 4.11's
Car is street/strip
Motor is (as soon as i can find them darn rods) a longrod slant with that 2nd from bigest (i can get the specs if you want) ISky cam and a 4bbl on a clifford intake with headers. Car is a 73 Scamp. Sky is blue, sun is bright.
thanks

Personally, I am going to avoid a lower first gear. I have enough traction problems to deal with. As soon as I can get it to hook I may be looking for a lower first.
The 904 will be more consistent than the manual. I can't give any first hand experience with the 3sp od tranny. I have HEARD they are not good for drag racing. Something to do with the gear spread being too much. I like my "normal" geared 904. A lower 2nd gear would be nice. You will like that Isky cam for street/strip. Get a higher stall converter and you will really like it. (I have it in a standard rod .060 over 225 running close to 12:1 CR) I am planning on getting the bigger Isky soon. Hope this helps a bit, I am sure the pros can elaborate further. Chad

BOY everyone you talk to will tell you something different. The four speed (non-over drive) will be the fastest. But then you have to worry about missing shifts, clutch problems and not running the same ET every time. The 904 with the low gear will also work very well. I have tried them all and I have the best luck with a 5 speed manual tranny. The car launches hard and I am in 2nd gear before the 60 foot mark. The best 60 foot time has been 1.604. With the engine you are building you will also need a higher stall converter with the auto tranny. You don't want to be 1/2 down the track before you're in the power band of the camshaft. RACING IS FUN !!!!

Assuming you can rev to at least 5500 with good power and your suspension and driving are great, the OD/4.11 combo will be 0.3-0.6 sec faster, I would bet. The wide ratio OD will really hurt you if your power band is not broad enough, or if you drop below 3000-3500 on your shifts.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm thinking the OD tranny would not work well for me. I got this reply on Moparts and I'm posting it here for FYI.

feets don't like the 833 OD.
The gears are: 3.09, 1.69, 1:1, .73
If you shift at 6000 RPM it goes a follows:
1-2 shift drops from 6000 RPM to 3281 RPM
2-3 shift drops from 6000 RPM to 3550 RPM
3-4 shift drops from 6000 RPM to 4380 RPM

For street driving and shifting at 3000 RPM, you get the proportional drop in RPM. 1640, 1775, 2190. It's too big of a drop for my comfort. Some folks like it. All I like is the OD.
Mine is going away as soon as the 3.23 gears show up.
The six is a good torquey li'l bugger but it doesn't have the wheaties to pull off that gear split.
I'd suggest a 3.91 gear and a non OD 4 speed in a super light car.
