 Post subject: Warped Intake Manifold
PostPosted: Sun Apr 07, 2002 6:58 pm
I've been having mucho problemo with my slant, and I think I've found the problem: warped intake manifold. Check my logic.
It will start cold great, but then as it warms it will no longer idle. It runs very rich and fouls the plugs, but pretty evenly. It has low vacuum (15' at sea level), yet I can't detect a vacuum leak with a carb cleaner test. I've rebuilt, replaced, or tested everything else (carb [Carter BBD], fuel pump, distributor, electronic ignition, coil, wires, plugs).

I was leaning toward a manifold gasket, but then I talked to an old mechanic who said these engines sometimes warp their manifolds, which fits my problem perfectly. Fits when cold, not when hot. He said its usually under the middle two ports, which is why I can't find it when spraying cleaner over the top.

1) Agree? Disagree? Another solution?
2) What do I need to know about pulling this thing apart and putting it back together. Do I have to torque the bolts or can I just pull down on 'em real good?
3) If it is warped (and I'm going in, so I'll know soon enough) why, and can I prevent it from happening again?

A leaking manifold will cause a lean condition not rich. It would also lower your vacuum. Sounds like a stuck choke to me. You say the carb was rebuilt. Double check that the choke was connected and adjusted properly when you reinstalled the carb.

I'd check that thermostatically controlled exhaust heat diverter that's in your exhaust manifold directly under your carburator. It's designed to provide carb heat when the car is cold, but slowly closes off once the car warms up. If it stays stuck open, you car will run really badly once it warms up. Chrysler made some special lube for the cross shaft that the diverster pivots on, but loosening it up with wd-40 is fine. The pivot shaft also has a bi-metal spring which can break or become disconnected, check that out also. Good luck.
