If anyone is interested in rear disc brakes for a BIG BOLT car, I have run into a guy who is making the kits for way cheaper than I have seen them before. The guy I talked to seemed to think that small bolt COULD be done, but we both agreed that it is a good excuse to go to big bolt all around anyway. He is charging $575 for a rear disk brake conversion and it includes a parking brake. If you do not want/need a parking brake, you can get it for $375. I saw a setup of his and it looked really clean. It uses Ford discs and GM calipers on a custom braket. I think you have to weld the braket for the brake line T onto the axle tube, but the custom bracket uses existing bolt holes and just bolts on.

I am not affilliated with him at all, just thought with the price being so right, others may want to know about it. His name is Cass Eslick and you can reach him at (406) 883-4772 in Polson Montana or email at doctordiff@centurytel.net

Hmmm, it sounds like this guy may have copied the TSM (The Streetrod Manufacturing Co - www.tsmmfg.com) kit?? Could be just a similar combination...

I just installed the TSM rear disc kit on my '64 Dart (already had 11.75" Chrysler disc/Wilwood caliper fronts) and the braking went from outstanding to unbelievable. Not a HUGE difference, but I can get better bias front/rear and it won't lock the rears so easily from high speeds. It uses Lincoln rotors and '78-83 Monte Carlo calipers (GM "Metric"). Total cost was $400 (no parking brake) including shipping and all stainless braided lines and fittings. BTW, I also converted to big bolt axles using new Moser axles ($225/pr w/studs installed + $80 for bearings and adjusters from Randy's).

Just another piece of info for ya,

Lou

Okay that brings up another question. How to convert to bolt bolt rear end. Is it easier to get an A body rear end (which I would assume would be narrower) or to get axles with the bigger pattern to go into the tiny 7 1/4 that I think is in there now. I may have answered my own question there, but input is always appreciated.

Is the 7 1/4 any good anyway? I am planning on more horsepower, but nothing extravagant.

I got station wagon axles and had them re-splined to fit. I found a company in Hemmings that did it, I think in Michigan.

I'm not sure the 7.25" axle will accept the rear disc kit from TSM. They did make 7.25" with big bolt pattern in the '70s, so you can find a whole axle at the junkyard. The axles from a later big bolt 7.25" will not swap into an earlier smallbolt version.

I forgot to mention that I started out with an 8 3/4 'A' body axle from Doug, then got the backing plates & brake gear from a '65 or so 'B' body wagon. The axles were then cut down & re-splined. The shoes are 10" x 2.5" so the rears tend to lock up because I did not get the right proportioning valve. I will probably get an adjustable valve to I can tune it in when I get the car back on the road.

Chuck,

I highly recommend the adjustable valve in the rear line (Summit - $40 - Wilwood unit w/Summit stamped on it). It makes a world of difference in locking/braking distance/pedal feel. Easy to adjust for different tires, etc... I have them on both my Darts and would not go back.

Cheers,

Lou

Did I read on some forum at one time that there was a Ford compact (can't recall the model)rear end with disc brakes that was near a drop in for A-bodies?

That would be the Lincoln Versailles and certain Ford Granadas. Those rear axles are very rare, though, as are replacement rotors for them. However, if you can find a 9" rear from a Mustang, Comet, Falcon, Granda, or late '70s Marquis (not Grand Marquis, and not the Fox-body either), it will bolt into an A-body, and you can use Explorer rear discs with that.

Thanks, I appreciate the tip. How about putting that part number & description in the Interactive Parts Database for us? If you don't have the supplier address just fill in the part number, description and application fields. If there is a web site, put that in the address field.

Thanks for the urging, Chuck. I posted this part on the database.

Happy braking,

Lou
