Post subject:  Carb mixture and vacuum

Well on my carter bbd, 225ci, I hooked up a vacuum gauge directly to a port that sticks up off the intake manifold. It is giving me a solid 23 in. I am trying to set idle mixture, watching gauge but the only time I see and hear something happen is if I turn the screws bascially all the way in, if I start backing them off I never see or hear a change, so much so that the screws are about to fall out. All the info I read says that when you back them out , at some point the engine starts to bog down again.???

Maybe I have too much vacuum??

Many emissions carburetors have a very small idle mixture change with the adjustment needles. If you tried what you have with an aftermarket Holley non-emission carb you could easily flow enough fuel to bog the engine as the needle adjustment makes a large difference and the idle circuit will flow plenty of fuel.
