Occasionally, the 1963 Dart wagon will fail to start. I will turn the key, and the oil pressure light will dim for a moment, but the starter will not engage. I hear something fluctuating in the dashboard, almost like the sound the blinker makes when it clicks. Usually after a couple tries the starter engages, but today, it took repeated attempts before the starter responded, and I’m no longer OK with skating by as it is: I want to fix this so I don’t have this happen again. Is this a neutral safety switch or a dashboard relay issue? Does anybody know what’s happening?

Thanks for the help, in advance.

From the ignition switch (when you turn the key), electrons flow through the yellow wire to energize the starter relay (mounted on the firewall I believe), which then in turn causes the solenoid on the starter to close.

A test light at the starter relay will verify if the yellow wire is flowing electrons to the relay, and then if it closes, are electrons flowing out of the relay through the brown wire to the solenoid.

That is where I'd start looking.

Also, try cleaning and tightening your battery terminal connections if they are not clean and tight.

x2 for the starter relay.

Since it's mounted to the firewall above the throttle linkage, it might sound like it's behind the dashboard.

Hi guys. Hope everyone is doing well. Been a long time, but circling back to this issue if you can believe it.

I never did get the no-start condition resolved because I stopped driving the car for a good long while. But it's back, and I'm dusting things off, servicing what needs attention. The car had started before, but no longer! Starter doesn't even crank I just the same old noise.

Following up on this thread, I purchased a new starter relay from O'Reilly's, part SR102

https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/st ... R102&pos=0

Installed this relay, starter seemed ready to crank for a hot second and stopped. Now it's the same noise as before.

Back to square one. Where else should I look? Would a starter issue fry the relay? Or something else?

Hunting around for my service manual here somewhere...Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Probably your ignition switch; next on the list is the wiring between the ignition switch and the starter relay. Follow this (keeping in mind your neutral-safety switch could also be a cause; check that first by pulling the small brown wire that goes to the transmission off the starter relay and grounding that relay terminal).

You know what else could persistently cause an intermittent no-start issue?

A loose starter terminal nut.

 ….*pounds marble head*

Thanks for the help Dan.
