Post subject:  HEI conversion - 87 relay question

1967 Dodge Dart 270, 225cid 1bbl engine. It came with a points distributor and I'm making the switch to the HEI setup. I'm following the (extremely helpful!) "How-to" thread put together by SlantSixDan. I also scoured the 32-page discussion thread and didn't find an answer to the following question. Finally, I'm living proof that being "educated" doesn't make you smart. :P

I have all my parts and I'm wiring it. Hooking up the relay has gone well - 30, 85, and 86 on my relay are wired in just fine. I'm stuck on the 87 relay connection. Dan's instructions read,

Quote:
87 is your power output. Connect this via a 14ga wire to the coil + and to the module's power terminal.

I'm having a hard time picturing this. Let me describe what is coming to my mind and I ask that you correct me.

(1) I run a 14ga wire from 87 to Coil + somehow. Do I just cram it through the plastic connector on the coil?
(2) I cut a splice on that 14ga wire.
(3) I cut a splice into the wire running from the distributor to the module's power terminal.
(4) With my 14ga splice, I connect the wire I ran in (1) to the splice I created in (3) (effectively creating a bridge between 1 and 3).

Is that correct? I apologize if I'm not being clear and will happily answer any questions y'all might have. I thank you ahead of time for your patience and your help!

Pin 87 of the relay will connect to both the Coil + and the Module B terminals. Splice it together any way you can, the 'how' isn't that critical.
The two distributor wires ONLY go to the module (directly).
This diagram has a GM style coil with 4 pins (two not used). If you use a Ford style coil, that will only have the two connections.

Thanks!

So ... did I wire this correctly? The yellow wire is connected to 87 on my relay - I spliced it into the red wire that runs from the Coil + to the module. Here's a link to my tweet with the photo:

OK, I think you have things wired correctly, if the yellow wires is going to Pin 87 of the relay, and the relay is wired like the diagram I posted.
Your setup looks similar to the one I made.

BTW, if you crank it up and it runs poorly, try swapping the distributor pickup wires around. For some reason this makes a difference sometimes.

Heck, at this point, I'd be happy if it ran at all! :P
