I am doing a turbo/propane build on a couple of slants. If I just go with a J or U pipe from the stock exhaust manifold (used/new/Dorman), what is the life expectancy of that manifold ? The first couple will just be grunt motors for hauling in pickups then maybe build something that could break. I believe propane burns a little hotter (104 to 112 octane) so this won' help the grow/shrink. Alternatively, I could fab. up split 3's out of schedule 40 304 SS. Is that a good idea ? two 225's and a 170 Any advise is appreciated. I feel guilty getting the benefit of all these years of wisdom and experience. I am suspicious of your assertion that propane burns hotter and/or has a hotter exhaust, haven't heard/read that. Actually since it is reported to be a cleaner burn, it might be a less corrosive exhaust. So SS is not a requirement, because of propane and definitely no heavy wall stuff like sch 40, it absorbs a lot of heat the turbo likes. SS for Turbo is certainly nice, A HT temp coating would lengthen life of steel tubing, and reduce some ambient under hood temps, you have to decide if the cost/benefit is worthy. Do NOT toy with any exhaust wraps with steel tubing. |

So, the original question is the life expectancy of a stock exhaust manifold under turbo conditions. I understand that boost pressures and fuel types are big variables. What are you guys seeing for durability in general under turbo applications ? |

Ask "Brian" in Pittsburgh. I believe he has a car with a welded stock manifold and turbo... I will try sometime soon with a stock manifold, but not yet. Others have made it work, but maybe not long term on a driver. How much HP do you want to make and will you tune with a WB O2 (AFR) gauge so it is not lean?? Lou |
