Post subject:  placement of oil return fitting

Im changing oil pans to put a later motor in my 62 lancer. I will be putting a turbo on at some point. I want to add an oil return fitting in the pan now. Would like ideas on what fitting to use and where to place it. Have been looking at the fittings on ebay like this one
https://www.ebay.com/itm/5-8-Oil-Pan-Dr ... 2ab8332f25.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'd use an AN fitting like that.

Then braided AN hose from turbo(AN fitting too) to pan.

Sometimes it's cheaper to get a NPT fitting then an adapter to go to an AN fitting...…………..

John,

I welded a piece of steel plumbing pipe to my pan (3/4 NPT). For the return line, you just need a large diameter hose that can withstand the heat near the turbo exh housing, and there is very little pressure. I bought a cheap tapered (AN-NPT) adapter fitting at a hose supply place to make an adapter but you could also just use NPT fittings and hose clamp the hose on. Depending on the car, you may want to go forward from where I have mine. I did one for a 64 Valiant and it ran into the steering box mount a little, so further forward might be good. That pan is currently on the LeMons racecar, so I can't look at it now.

Also, where do you plan to put the turbo? That will determine somewhat where you put the drain line fitting in the pan. You want the drain line to be as vertical as possible.

Hope this helps,

Lou

Two other recommendations
1) Make sure the entrance to the pans is above the oil level
2) have the fitting in the pan inline with a main bearing cap/saddle, to reduce windage, of the oil being inline with the rotating assy. (rods and counterweights)

Well finally have time to get back to work on the Lancer. I looked at mounting near the mains #2 is behind motor mount, #3 is not that vertical but doable. The only other place is center of crank between the con rods. Does any one have a measurement of the oil level on an early slant pan? Got an AN bolt on fitting from a local engine builder, the only thing I dont like is the nut is 3/8 inch thick, which makes for clearance issues, might have to break out the welder.

Found a good weld on fitting, the step fit tight in the hole and made welding set up easy.[attachment=0]

It was cheap to, $8.99 for 2 with free shipping. Tried to get it near the main but ended up at the counterweight. .....

Please post the fitting source/link/part number when you get a chance.

The oil just dribbles out so I would not (and did not) worry about location near counterweight or whatever else.
