A few months ago I asked a question about building a race engine for a HAMB dragster I had under construction. I recieved a lot of valuable information. Thanks to all who contributed. Now, I have the dragster done and have made a few runs in the driveway. The engine is stock, and tired, with a home made intake/exhaust with two 1920 Holleys. Currently is has a OD 4 speed but that will get changed to a regular 4 speed, or possibly a 3 speed as I will use either 2 or 3 gears. Once I can afford to buy all the safety apparel NHRA requires for an open car, I'll hit the dragstrip. Hopefully, I'll solve the off idle stumble before I get to the strip.
During the winter I'll build the race engine.

Excellent project! Are you in the Cities? Seymour should know about this...

Stillwater is about 10 miles east of St. Paul.
Here's the Intake/Exhaust. 1 1/2" 90 degree emt bends cut in half were used for the intake runners. I sized the plenum and intake runner length according to Leo Santucci's formula for Chevy 6's. The individual exhaust pipes will cost some performance, but I needed the old style look. The plywood carb spacers are gone. They interfered with the vacuum signal to the carbs. I made the top of the manifold removable so when I have a built engine it will be easy to make a new top for a different carb arrangement.
The plan is to build a Weisco/K1 rod engine, do my own porting and use a cam suggested by members of this site. The new engine will no doubt overpower the tires, so I might have to sneak a pair of slicks on it just to see what it will do.
My driveway "tests" have resulted in about 40 feet of light tires marks. Probably would be a lot more but I don't want to drive it through the back wall of the garage!

Finally made it to the drag strip Saturday. I made 5 passes starting conservatively. The car handled very well. I didn't go very fast though. The tired OD 4 speed with it's original shifter took quite a bit of time to go from gear to gear. Shifting a stick with several curves in it, between my legs wasn't conducive to speed shifting. And, my $100 Craigslist 225 slant has never been touched. I managed a 15.80 @ 88 mph. Probably lost a half second shifting.
I'm going to run it in two weeks. Any suggestions on simple tuning tips I can apply? Timing, valve lash, etc.

Howdy Bob,

We're getting the best out of our tired stocker with 29/30* on a nailed distributer, .004" intakes & .014" exhausts (zinc additive). That's under a mostly stock 318 BBD (haven't put the SUs back on yet, maybe at Butch's meet next weekend). Running'er fairly cool at the tree and working the clutch rather than the tires.

How were the first pass grinnits? :D

Love that dragster (and the car behind it)! I would love to build one of these someday. Please keep us posted on your winter build. Glad to see others putting a slant in something other than an a body. What is under the tarp in your primered car? Thanks for the pics, Wayne.

I have to admit that these little dragsters are starting to grow on me.

If you need a better shifter I have an older Competition Plus with a straight stick that could be had for very little money.

The car in the background is a '25 Dodge with a 350 Chev in it. Gosh, I wish I hadn't done that!
This weekend is a 2 day hot rod/nostalgia race at Brainerd where a NHRA national meet took place a couple weeks ago.
I hooked up a heater motor to drive the water pump hoping to gain a couple HP. Will try to improve my driving/shifting and improve my e.t.
After this weekend, the car will come apart and the engine buildup will start.
I have Mike Jeffrey's phone #, but is there an email address or is he on this site? I need to find out about getting a head.
Almost positive I'll put a 904 trans in it. Any suggestions about how much to build the trans to handle 250-275HP in a 1,400lb. car?
What is typical deck height with the Wiseco piston/K1 rod combination?
Don, I've got a lot to do before I could even keep you in sight at the strip. Maybe someday...
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Bob
