Hey Derek,

That's great to read! You definitely picked some good people to follow.

This really is THE place for all things "Slant".

I'm looking forward to seeing your thread started. Since it's a street/strip car you can put it in either Virtual Dragstrip or Slixer's Gallery (or both! )

We like pictures! :D

I got the new race motor pulled out of the GodsRods Duster this evening.

As soon as I get the original GodsRods engine off the stand and into the Duster I'll put the new race motor on the stand. I only have two stands and three engines.

Then I can swap all the goodies over and install the new 14:1 motor into the Challenger so I can be ready for the opening of racing season next year.

Sounds like progress. Yeah, I think I need another engine stand too...

I had four at one time

One of them was a home made super heavy, cumbersome one that came with the '64 Valiant convertible I bought for $200.

The guy had the seats reupholstered and was half way through an engine build when the project stalled. It came with all the new engine parts (pistons, bearings, rings, etc) as well as a rebuilt push button trans.

Unfortunately, the quarter panels were fine works of art (sculpted bondo  )

I may swing by Harbor Freight and pick up a third one... It would have been nice to have last night.

I've got 3 engine stands and 2 engine cranes at the shop. Cousin is going to send over another crane too.

Good thing you got a big shop!

Two cars, an engine hoist, three engines and assorted other parts, tools, etc get just a tad cramped in my little 2 car garage.

Okay Jon,

Here are some pics of the latest happenings at the GodsRods Garage.

I'm very familiar with working in the dirt! It wasn't until 2002 that I had a garage to work in.

My favorite "In the Dirt" story was pulling a fully dressed 440/727 combo out of a Polara that I was building into a "Bomber Bumper" car for some local dirt track fun. I was using a bent up homemade engine hoist with a cable come along... Good thing I wasn't worried about scratching the paint!

I like my garage a LOT better! :D

This is from a week or more ago when I pulled the wounded engine out of the Challenger.

Image

Here's a shot of the engine on a stand and the GodsRods Duster in the background before I pulled the new engine back out.

Image

The empty engine compartment.

Image

Here's what the whole deal looks like.

Image

I've got some more recent pics showing the original GodsRods engine installed in the Duster, etc. However, they're on my phone and I can't seem to get them to transfer...

I'll swing by the garage on the way home this evening and take few pics with my camera.

I figgered it out after all! :D

I was just trying to do it in a spot where I didn't have good enough service...

Here ya go!

In this shot you can see the original GodsRods engine getting ready to be put into GodsRods Duster II. In the background is the Challenger with the new race motor in front of it. If you look very closely, you can just barely see the top of the Challenger's original engine above the fender of the Duster. It's sitting on a stand between the two cars (and very much in my way! )

Image

Here's the GodsRods Duster II waiting for the milder engine to be installed.

Image

Ask and ye shall receive!

Image

Here is this same engine in GodsRods Duster I back in May 2004. We had just put it all together and taken it to Reynolds Georgia along with my '72 Dart with it's new 318.

Image

This is Kendall at the South Georgia race in May 2006. I flew back from Germany for his high school graduation and we managed to make a race while I was there as well. :D

That's Jeb's Duster in the background.

Image

This is where we got GodsRods Duster I down to a tire spinning 14.85.

I made some progress on the GodsRods Duster II and got the new race engine on a stand next to the engine that came out of the Challenger.

I'll start swapping parts over onto the new engine the next time I'm over there (oil pan, motor plate, etc).

I pulled the head and oil pan off the Challenger's first engine...

The head is with Gerald Wright in GA for a good going through and flow on his bench.

There was some intake valve to piston contact on most cylinders. Some worse than others.

I need to do some measuring before I continue the teardown.

The oil pickup had vibrated loose from the AN fitting on the side of the deep sump oil pan, so I assume that the engine had starved for oil at times (probably at WOT when a lot of oil was out of the pan), which could explain the 1 second gain in ET.

Lifters all look good.

More later...

Rob, from what I am seeing it looks like those pistons need the valve reliefs recut. It may just be reflections but it looks like on the first cylinder they are backwards. (bigger one to the front)

I'll measure the reliefs. I thought they looked like the same size, but it's just eyeballin' it. A couple of the rear cylinders have less dramatic touching, but still the intake valves.

Gerald mentioned that we could carefully re-work the reliefs for clearance.

I'll be interested to see the bearings. I may get lucky and just need new rings and bearings...

Yes, recutting them is not a real big deal. You just have to make sure to keep the pistons at equal weight.

I've been wanting to get a small scale to weigh this stuff and play around a little anyway... :D
