The pictorial evidence that the Challenger has finally seen the light of day (night) after 6 years, 19 days and 6 hours... I had posted this last month, but the post was lost with the board crash.

Rob it looks like the pickup is made up with flair fittings. It might be a good idea to weld in a bung and then weld the pickup to it and you would not have to worry about it coming loose again.

Thanks Ron. I will look at that.

I decided not to weld the pickup in the pan because it would make it harder to make sure it is completely clean the next time I disassemble it.

It held together pretty well for Norm for several years before coming loose, so I reassembled it with red loc-tite and a lot of torque.

I estimated the pan to be at 6 quart capacity in the sump. Maybe estimate another quart with the filter and the engine nooks and crannies (?)

I need to make a dipstick to go in the side of the pan. The tube is a different design than the typical block type, so I need to look around at what will work and seal well. I have a couple other truck pans, but no pickups or dipsticks to go with them. Norm didn't use a dipstick that I remember.

I also plan to use the "baffle/windage thingy" I made as it is mounted with locknuts and red loc-tite. The screen Norm had in there was still secured to the tabs. It had just fallen apart. I figure this homemade design will help with a little bit of slosh protection on launch and allow the oil to drain back into the sump well enough.

I'll get it assembled and sealed back up once I get the dipstick made.

Next step will be to reinstall the head. I'll have a couple questions on that soon....

I finally took a couple minutes to mount the dipstick in the side of the pan. I'll get the windage tray / baffle thingy mounted and get the oil pan sealed up maybe this weekend. Then I'll flip the engine over and start installing the head, etc. I realized it had been about two months since I posted anything, so I'd better do something...

I cut down a dipstick from another application (Ford I think) and used JB Weld to mount it in the original dipstick tube in the side of the modified deep sump truck pan.

Here you can see the dipstick, pick up tube mounted in the side and the tabs for the windage tray / baffle thingamajig I made.

The dipstick is pressed into the original tube and secured with JB Weld.

The pickup tube bung is welded into the side of the pan and the pickup itself is a flare fitting tightened securely with red loc-tite. It sits approximately 1/4” from the floor of the pan.

The tabs were already welded into the pan. They held a thin gauge aluminum expanded metal screen before. The screen had fallen apart and one of the tabs had broken loose. I welded the tab back in and made a different style windage / baffle thingy to replace the screen. I cut up the side shelf from an old barbecue grill I was throwing away.

A closer view of the pickup tube and dipstick.

I drilled a small hole in the dipstick to indicate 6 quarts of oil in the pan. I may drill another hole or two to indicate 4 and/or 5 quarts. The actual amount put in will need to be verified and adjusted after it is run and has all the nooks, crannies, lines and filter filled.

I like it Rob! You have given me ideas for my own oil pan. Keep plugging away at it.
