Ok, I name all my engines. I am not sure when or why I started this, but here is the engine, Dragon, that is going in the 65 Belvedere. I got tired of waiting on the head, so I put a spare one on the racing short block. I wanted to mount the alternator, verify pulley alignment. I also wanted to see how the intake and headers fit.

With any luck, I'll have the race head back and the engine in the car by the end of the month.

Looks great, Matt! Can't say I've heard of a Slant named Dragon before.

How far are you from your nearest track?

SummerDuck is about 30 minutes away and a couple of other 1/8 mile tracks within an hour drive. The nearest 1/4 mile track is Budds Creek, Maryland at 91 miles. Richmond Dragway is a 1/4 track 110 miles away. Believe it or not, Mason-Dixon is closer to me than Virginia Motorsports Park (well...closer by about 2 miles).
Anyway, race head will be ready soon and I'll be back in business.

Names for motors is fun. ☺

I miss seeing names on race cars. That was the fun part of watching racing in the '60s and '70s.

Slantzilla was the name of my first Slant race engine.

I will be putting "Drain Bamaged" on the car after I get it painted.

Never had names for my engines, but did name most of my cars. All my Mopar "A" bodies have been "Charlie's Angel".

Well, rainy day off and still waiting on parts. Got the original trans out of the car. Getting it ready for the new, race trans. I shifted the engine around on the stand so that I could tilt it without it falling over. Now I can work on some of the details until parts arrive. stuff like fuel lines, engine wiring, etc. It's a lot easier without the engine out of 'tilt'.

Trying to keep positive about racing this season.

Looks great, Matt. Hope to see you on the track later in the season, and get to chew the hide a bit.

Well, now I went and done it.....
Trying to rush things and wouldn't you know it, I cut into the water jacket while finishing up the head porting. This after waiting three months to get the frikkin head from the machine shop. I have ported dozens of big block heads with no problems. I just wasn't careful and I was in a rush.
Dag Nabbit!!!
At this rate, I'll see you guys next year, or the next....
sigh...
I'm off to find another head.
What's the worst that can happen?

What if I loaned you a big valve head to use? Would you come race with us next month?

At this point, I am pretty disgusted with the dang thing. It's very frustrating. I appreciate the offer, but I am just going to stand back and regroup.

I have had the same thing happen on two different heads. I had them repaired by a guy who specializes in welding cast iron then coated the inside of the head with some sort of ceramic coating and the repair hasn't failed yet. Afterwards you do have to touch up the deck surface and the valve job to correct any warpage.

Yes, I'd love to get the head repaired. I have been looking for someone local to repair it but I haven't found anyone I trust won't make it even worse.
In the meantime, I'll find another head and start over. I'm not ready to give up on the slant. The harder things get, the more determined I am.
