Here is the central figure in making it go faster. New cylinder head. Has 7MM valves and flows really well. :D :D

Who did the head on this beast?

Too much pinion angle will tend to make the car violent.

Yes and that is where he is at. He almost went into the wall once. So it needs fixed quickly! :D :D

The head was done by someone down south, North Carolina maybe, but I am not sure who. I believe he was a professional "porter" for someone in NASCAR some years ago. He is a friend of our engine builder friends here in PA, Kriner's Racing Engines. It has the purdiest runners I have ever seen, plus it flows well. I will have to ask Ryan but I'm pretty sure he took one of Mike's head's along with him when he ported the new one. He said that Mike new what he was doing too!!! :D :D

2 to 3° down is plenty.

Yes, When I took the head to Kriners, I also took one of Mike's heads for them to look at and compare to. They were very impressed with Mike's work and didn't know if they could improve over what he did or not. The new head does flow somewhat better than the old head. I will try to find the flow bench reports for the heads we had tested when I get a chance.

I will try to get some new videos of the car posted soon, so that you all can see what the car is doing. The car isn't bouncing as badly when running lower tire pressure but it is still far to violent initially. I will get some measurements when I get a chance too.

I tried to make a link to the videos of the race car. Hopefully the link works. If not let me know and I will try to fix it.

This should let you all see what the car is doing. I'm still thrilled overall and hopefully with a little help I can get the launch much smoother.

The car ran a best of 7.1881 @ 93.5 MPH in the 1/8.
Launching @ 3600 RPM
Shifting @ 6200

One interesting thing I found out about the engine, is it will turn 7400 rpm. My rev limiter chip fell out of the msd box and while doing a 2nd gear burnout the car quickly revved to almost 7400 rpm. I immediately backed off to 6000 for the rest of the burnout, but I was surprised how quickly it ran up above 7000 rpm. I initially thought my tachometer wasn't reading properly until I verified the rpm with another tach and found the limiter chip was missing. That was quickly corrected and back to running a safer rpm. Does make me wonder how far this engine can be pushed and still make power.

If you watch the videos, and block off the front half of the car, and then watch again blocking off the rear half of the car you can see that the rear suspension is quickly loading (planting) the tires and then just as quickly unloading them. It also seems like the left side is more violent than the right side. It's difficult to tell without some slow motion to better identify the exact motion involved.
Are you using the front suspension limiters? If so, maybe loosen them up or maybe remove entirely for a few passes. What shocks are you running on this and what does the rear suspension consist of?

Looks like tuning pinion angle and shock rebound is in order.

Less angle....stiffer rebound

High RPM will kill it. Let's see what it will do before getting "RPM fever". I seriously doubt it will go any faster if you shift at 6400+. Tilley's best NA/weber motors made peak HP under 6000, and I bet yours is the same. LONG stroke means huge forces at high RPM. 6000 with a 225 is like 9000 with a 318. Sure, it will turn faster, but...

Hey Ryan!

It's time to update your signature block with "Valiant Stuff"! :D

My 232 seemed to like 6500. I turned it 7000 a few times, but all it did was make more noise.

Mike told me he always shifted at 6200.

Holy Crap, the calculators say you are pushing 270-300+ HP in that thing (assuming 2000-2350 lb. weight).

I have gradually moved my shift point up to 6000 on the Duster. I can "feel" that it isn't making more power any higher than that. That's my story anyway. I can't really explain it...

Looks like the leafs have too much spring rate because the car lifts back up fast and the shocks can't handle it. The original builder of your car may have drained the shocks to remove some weight, so you might need some new shocks. My 2 cents worth.
We leave at 6200, shift at 6600 and go across at 6800. Be doing it 21 years so it might be time for a camshaft change.

Double adjustable shocks would allow you to control the hit and slow down the rebound if I am thinking right?

IF they are not worn out. Shocks are a wear item.

Howard says they shift theirs at 9000.
