So, After way way way too long. Seymour's Valiant is finally ready to race again. There were a few minor issues and an internal scraping sound that had me worried for a while but everything was identified and corrected and it seems to be ready to race. Dad helped me get everything finished up the last couple of weeks. We got the engine broke in properly changed and spent some time fixing leaks and little things and all that's left now is to send it down the track.

I took it for the inaugural run through Dads neighborhood just to make sure everything was ok. Made a couple of full throttle launches and ran it through the gears and everything seems good to go. If you have never launched a race car with a trans brake in your neighborhood I........well I guess I don't recommend it, but it was a lot of fun today. (maybe a bit on the scary side) We got a few pictures after I cleaned off the 3 years of dust.

So a quick update on the engine.
It is the same block, crank, camshaft, webers and general setup seymour had. We just rebuilt it using:
weisco/K1 pistons & Rods compression ratio of 13.8:1 up from 11:1
New cylinder head that (on the flow bench anyway) out flows the old head significantly.
Running a new multi layer steel head gasket that if it hold up we will try to make more/sell (they also fit the aluminum blocks)

Other than the slightly bigger bore, higher flowing head and extra compression, everything else is the same.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at mason dixon next week and if all goes well I'm hoping to start tuning and making this even faster.

That's fantastic!
Way ahead of me.
What sort of times was it laying down before the refresh?
I see some trick things there (no headlights).
More pics please.

Here is the central figure in making it go faster. New cylinder head. Has 7MM valves and flows really well. :D :D

FANtastic! Congrats to both Ryan and Rick. I am so excited to see this rocket on the track in 6 days!

Thanks for the rundown and for the hard work to make it all happen.

Thanks everyone,

I'm excited to get it down the track and i'm really looking forward to seeing everyone in a few days.

Matt, I will try to take some more pictures when i get a chance. Dad already posted some pictures of the engine but the other great part about this car is how much work seymour did to lighten the chassis. He really did an amazing job of getting weight off of this car and if it wasn't for that it probably wouldn't have set a record. I will try to take some pictures of the lightening work that was done when I get a chance.

Next project is to figure out why the car bounces so bad right off the starting line. I have some more reading to do on Cal-Tracs and shocks. Once this car makes a few passes and I make sure there are no major issues, the plan is to figure out the suspension. I'm assuming sitting for 3 years didn't miraculously fix the suspension issues from before.

First thing you need to do is check pinion angle, then get more rear compression so it quits crushing the tires. Then, you can start tuning. Too much pinion angle will tend to make the car violent.

Dizduster on Moparts put up some very good videos last fall about shock tuning. If you can get the wonderful Search function to work over there they are definitely a good watch.

What pinion angle do you need with a super light car with a transbrake? It also has Caltrac bars on it.
