I was doing the valve lash and noticed the end bolt closest to the firewall was not installed. Does anyone have the rocker shaft bolt and curved washer that goes underneath? If anyone knows a place to order one would work. If I can PayPal you I'm ready!!

There are two different bolts used. The early heads used a 3/8 course thread bolt, and the later heads used a 5/16 course thread "stepped" bolt. Need to know which one you need.

Also, if you have rocker arms that have adjustment screws on the top above the pushrod, then it is the "early" engine and you need the 3/8" bolt. It seems you were doing a lash adjustment, so most likely this is what you have. Just to make absolutely sure, you can thread a long 3/8" coarse thread bolt (3" or longer) into the hole at the back and see if it engages the threads in the cylinder head. If not, then someone might have swapped rockers from an early engine. You can then try a 5/16" bolt and see if that threads in cleanly and tightly.

There are engines/heads that have adjustable valve train, that used the 5/16 stepped bolt (PS: that bolt is a little difficult to find). Not sure of the year, but I think the change was around the mid '70's. The hydraulic head did not start until 1981.

Hi Charlie,

Yeah you're right! That late 70s peanut plug head was 75-79 and maybe 1980 too or there was some crossover in that year, IIRC.

Well it seems my best way to know is to pull a bolt from the rocker shaft and do some measurements. I don't think I have the original head on my block. Block is a 68 from what I can tell. I went to get plugs yesterday and they gave me the "fat" plugs. What came out of the head was a 5/8 skinny plug

Are the holes in the head that go down to the pushrods small (about 1/2" diameter) or larger (about 1" diameter)? You cannot pull a different bolt than the back one because all the others will be 3/8" diam no matter what the year, and they are shorter.

You will want plugs for a 75 up Slant 6. NGK UR4 or UR5 or Autolite 25 or 26 work well on a stock or moderately modified engine.

The sleuthing continues...

The last motor I had in my Valiant neede the step bolt and I didn't have one. I used a 5/16" carb mounting stud with a locknut on top. It seemed to work fine.

Yes, I very much doubt you need the step for proper rocker oiling. I regular grade 8 quality 5/16" coarse bolt should work. I don't like the carb stud because they are usually not very strong metal, but otherwise fine...
