I couldn't find your number on that list, so I believe you are right that it is some kind of factory remanufactured unit for replacement.

The number on your pan rail appears to be
PK1327658312777

with the "P" overstamped by a "4".

The closest match I could find for the number on your pan rail is

4058311

which is a 1979 standard duty truck two wheel drive slant six 904 with a long extension housing. That makes sense since your tailshaft housing looks a bit long to me But it could just be the angle of the picture.

That is the best I can do for you. Maybe someone with better reference books can offer a better answer.

The pan is shaped like a 904, so I am not sure how they would classify this as a 727. Did they beef up a 904 and call it a 727? I have heard the 727 used more horse power? Is this true, and if so why? Does anybody think this is a 727?



The tail shaft housing is 15" long to the end of the housing, not counting the seal. The trans mount is 7" back from the joint between the housing and the main case.

Date code calculator says this trans was made on July 15th 1977. It must have been for '78 production. If that number 58312 is the date code, what numbers on the tranny would correspond to the model ID chart in Reed's link. Things are not making much sense with the rest of the numbers.

2777 is seqence no. 2,777 built that day Date code 5831 works out to July 15 1977. Looks to me like your orignal numbers have been filed off. An orignal number starts with a faint P K then seven numbers. For exsample PK4058383. then space date code xxxx space sequence no. Some times on other side of tranny on bell housing is a partial vin no.

Looks like 904. 4058311 is a good tranny number. Its Just not for the one you have. 5831 is the date code.

The spotting guides I found on line have this as a standard 904 for a passenger car based on the tabs below the tail housing between the speedo housing and the cross member mount.Does anybody know what those tabs are for? The length agrees with what I found on line for what they identify as a 904, but they did not specify short or long tail. They said 904. Distance from mount to tail shaft end is 8 inches as indicated on the drawing I found on line.

I also ID'd it as a lock up based on the number of spline (26) on the input shaft. So what I know so far is that it is for a car, it is a 904 and it is lockup. But I do not know the year. The story unfolds.

Input shaft spline count. Lockup has 26 teeth ,non-lockup has 27 teeth.

It does have 26 teeth.

Man, I missed the boat completely on that one! Good thing I only rarely try to ID a part by the part number.

That is what the tabs look like. Does anybody know the distance from mount to end on the short and long tail shafts? This is 8" not counting the seal, which sticks out another inch or so.

Don't feel bad Reed. This is murky territory. Someone on all par said those numbers "don't tell you squat". Apparently he had been fooled a few times before. I trust the date code, but nothing else there.
