Did you tap into the wiper of the Vol pot?
On my AM/FM radio that is where the switch between the two bands is. I took off the AM feed and replaced it with the summed-mono feed from a mini plug the goes into a phone.
Curious how you did it on yours.

Mine is AM only so i summed the lefter and right channels together with two 220 ohm resistors and tied it into the wiper on the vol.switch,,,now it plays the AM radio until i plug in the mp3 then it plays the mp3 until i unplug it.

Electrical newbie, but would love to see pics/diagram of either set-up, especially for stock AM!

I didn't take any pics; sorry. I was already in the radio, which needed a new filter cap (lots of hummmmmmm) and did it on a whim.

On mine, I took the last 12" of a stereo mini plug & cable, fed the cable through a hole in the chassis and soldered the wires to the Vol where the AM wires had been. I coiled the slack in the ashtray, and when I want to use it I plug it into my [iPhone] and switch the band to AM.

On yours I am guessing you used a swtiching jack, so that if nothing is plugged in it is stock, and plugging in your device interrupts the AM signal and replaces it with your .mp3 signal. Yes?

Sound qual on mine is tolerable but I think I can get it better. I get a lot of motor whine even after replacing the condenser on the alternator. I will try intsalling dedicated + and - power wires, as close to the battery as is possible and see if that helps.

Also I plan on changing out the caps in the audio path. There are only a few so it should be fairly easy. I am hoping this will reduce the amount of distortion I get. I am not expecting miracles, just slightly better than it is now.

Slantfin, I have the Sams schematic for the AM/FM radio but not for the AM only. I can post the part that we are talking about - the Vol control - if you think it would help. I do recommend to anyone working on these radios to get the Sams "AR" book that contains their unit. I found mine on eBay for les than ten bucks.

For the noise using two caps from radio shack on the mp3 wiring and wiring ground work well, aswell as putting a cap between the ground wire.....

and as for slant-fin this is very simple,PM me and ill show you a schematic...as for better sound..i used a crossover to plug my radio into a small alpine 2 channel am to drive two 6x9s behind the back seat.
