Dear All,

I would like to convert my double barrel Carter BBD to work with LPG. Most people here in Turkey tells that drilling is a better way rather than using adapters. I do not want to drill my carb but does anyone has an experience on the subject? If drilling is acceptable where is the correct position? Just on top with single inlet or on the throttle body with two inlets?

Sincerely yours,

do you still want the ability to run on gasoline, or do you just want LPG?

I use an adapter between the carburator and the air cleaner. It is the most simple way to convert and leave your carburator unmodified. It works great, but as you can see it will restrict the airflow. I do not notice much difference though.

The amount of lpg that flows to your adapter is vacuum controlled, so in either way you need to restrict the airflow a little to create a vacuum.

Here's some pics:

Well, I want to be able to use gasoline... :) Most people here drills a hole to the carb and use lpg.

Well nice pics, thnx. In my country they put an adapter between the upper section and the lower body of the carb. In your system I guess the lpg inlet is above the choke butterfly, does it effect the choke system or you do no use it with lpg?

An adapter between the carb and the manifold might be a better option and is often used. But it is more difficult to make. You'll need longer studs in the manifold and you will have to adapt the kickdown link. I use a bit larger opening for the choke, but never have any problems when it is cold. The air-control valve in the air cleaner is removed.

You will lose power when driving LPG, depending on your specific setup and the size of your system.

The condition of the ignition is very important. A good spark and the right timing is essential for driving LPG. You don't want to risk a backfire. You might want to change to an electronic unit if your car has points. It is also a good idea to remove the EGR valve from the manifold.

It is a pretty simple conversion. Here more complex systems made by IMPCO are often used for high volume engines. These systems have a special mixer that replaces the air cleaner and controls the exact amount of LPG. These systems are a better option, you lose less power, but cost more.
