What 5 speed set up would you prefer T-5 or TKO 500?

I'd like to know what 5 speed tranny people would use. I know the TKO is nicer, but with the limited HP of a slant, I think people might want to use a T-5.

Since anything's going to require adaptation and custom work, there are lots of options. I think if I were going to look at doing this, the first two transmissions I'd look at would be the 5spd used behind the 3.9 V6 in the Dakota, and the Toyota Celica 5spd (which a number of Australians were putting in Valiants as early as the mid-1980s with good results.)

I have a RAP 5 speed...a light duty Dagenham box...installed in 99,,,driven evryday by a 20 year old. A TKO is overkill.

A T5 is good to 350ft/lbs of torque,,even in the 4cyl version. Do you think you will make more than that?

The lighter the box...the easier it is to shift and install ( my 5 speed fits under a stock 3 speed floor).

Lighter boxes have wider ratios (better for bigger cams and harder launches). Even with the worlds most tired Super 6 our Valaint will give a huge burnout due to the very low first gear.

Use a Supra or T5 and tell em its a TKO,,,no one will ever know.

My trans swap and post swap maintenace has cost TOTAL $600 for 5 years. Better to have the thing in than to save for years for the trick thing way down the road.

Keep in mind though my opinions are based on wanting big performance for no money.....

I used a "RAP" trans from an 82 Mustang 2.3L. My car had a stock aluminum bellhousing which I used as well as the stock clutch arm and throwout bearing.A stock Volare wagon driveshaft adapted to the stock Mustang slipjoint with a combination u-joint(NAPA).I used a clutch disc ( 9 1\4") from a Ford ranger and the stock Valiant pressure plate.I had the input bearing retainer machined down to fit the Valiant throwoutbearing and the bellhousing register(big hole the trans fits into)I had to do a little grinding inside the bellhousing to allow the holes to be drilled for the trans bolts(Mustang bolts through bellhousing into trans)I used Mustang bolts and then "clamped" trans to bellhousing using the stock Valiant bolt holes, total 8 bolts!,,,pretty ridgid. The tricky part was extending the trans input shaft to mimic the Valiant one,,I had an extension machined and then shrunk it onto the Mustang input shaft(heat extension,,,cool input shaft) we used some high temp Loctite to make us feel better. It is a little tricky getting the trans/bellhousing combo into the car,,,but it all fits nicely,,,my car was a 3spd originally so the trans hump is pretty small.I had to modify the trans mount and add my own "cushion mount".
You get 2 more gears,,,,1 lower than stock and 1 (OD) higher, the low gear is really low,,,with a stock super6 i can idle up a good grade in 1st,,,and do one hella burnout even with 235/60 14 BFGs. With 3,23 gears shift points are 20mph 40mph 60 mph 75 mph.
I used a Hurst shifter handle and "T" knob just for fun,,shifter ends up in the perfect spot.
Be warned RAP is a light duty box, however it weighs 15 lbs LESS than the stock 3spd.Image

The T5 is more than adequate for all but the most monstrous Slant builds. TKO would be way overkill and 20-40lbs heavier overall. Toyota Supra box would be cool, but I haven't done much research. Seem much harder to get parts for than the everywhere T5.

The Dakota 5spds have super low 1sts (sixinthehead has one in his 64 V100), so I personally wouldn't go there.

Any idea how the T-5 would hold up behind a slant six with slicks? I like the idea of the 5 speed also, but I'm not familiar with the strength of the T-5 when put to the torture test.

Rick

PS. What was the torque rating of the 833??

That was a great explaination. Do you have any other pics or diagrams/drawings of the process? The input shaft extension dimentions or the trans/bellhousing drilling would be particularly useful.

I have a bellhousing/fork/etc sitting in my garage, waiting for me to eventually get to this project. I am still working on the front end, so this is going to be awhile for me. In the meantime, I am collecting whatever success stories are out there.

Thanks,

Greg

All the Ford/Chevy T5 input shafts are shorter then what Chrysler used. The closest is from a v6 Mustang.

You could try a T5 from a 94-95 5.0 mustang. They are supposed to have a longer input shaft. I'm gonna try to fit an old B/W World Class box out of an 89 in mine...

Frankly I would worry more about a clutch and what rear end to use than whether a T5 would last with slicks...5 Litre guys have driven T5 s into the 10s with slicks.

My boys beat the hell out of my car with a RAP with a stock 9" clutch and an open 7.25 rear without incident. With a 235/60/14 tire and a stock Super 6 it doesnt have enough tire with the LOW 1st gear to not smoke the tires before breaking parts.

Yeah it just bolts in!,,,,NOT! The first thing you need is a lot of planning. The second thing you need is,,,,more planning. My swap was easy and cheap due to....a lot of planning.

We will be doing a moder swap in the Valaint in the next couple of weeks I will see if I can get some pics of the 5 speed stuff.

I have a Supra turbo and a Ford Mustang T5 side by side in my garage. I would use either of them. The Supra might be harder to find parts than a T5, but they'd not likely have problems with a street slant six. The turbo Supras are fun cars but the little sixes don't build peak torque until mid range, the 5.0 Fords are often thrashed by 18 year old stop light racers. The typical Supra salvage yard box has a lot of life in it.

I can find the Supra boxes for $50 to $80 in good shape. The T5s I typically come across needs a rebuild. I'd get a spare Supra box and set it aside.

If the supra tranny is the same one used in the pickup trucks, you wont have any problems finding parts..............
