 Post subject: T-5 Swap Pieces?

I'm trying to get some dimensions, part numbers, etc., from ANYONE who has sucessfully made the T-5 swap. There is precious little along these lines in past threads that have discussed this swap (at least rom what I can locate).

For example, I know there was a "group buy" of a bell housing but no mention of what that bell housing was in terms of make, model, etc. and why this was deemed the right way to go.

There was a mention of adding a .700" thick plate to the transmission mounting surface of group buy bell housing to space the input shaft appropriately and of course to allow the transmission to be mounted after the correct pattern was transferred to the plate. I'm fine with that but there is no mention of what the distance needs to be from the end of the input shaft to the engine mounting surface of the bell housing (this is the more important dimension as this determines how the input shaft and crank shaft mate-up. The .700" thickness spacer mentioned is just a means to achieve it).

Next, what clutch and release bearing was found to be best for the swap? Did everyone re-drill their flywheels to accept Mustang pieces or are they too large in diameter to fit the slant 6 bell housing?

Thanks much for anyhelp you can provide. I can figure this stuff out on my own if I need to as I mated a Viper T-56 to a 340 several years ago. However, in this case I would like to be able to tap into work that has already been done if possible.

I think they used the stock slant 6 Pressure plate and flywheel and the ford clutch disc.

We have one of the belhousings that we got from Seymour. I can check but I'm pretty sure the adapter plate is not .700 thick

If aluminum I'd stick with .5 or .625 (1/2" or 5/8").

I'm starting a similar project, but to mate an A-833 to the Np435 bellhousing, just picked up my CNC .625 aluminum plate today with
a 5.125" hole in it...next will be to jig it drill it , thread it, and measure
the runout and concentricity.

Short of knowing the dimensions for a stock bell housing (Engine mounting face to transmission mounting face) and the same for the aluminum factory 3 speed and 833OD bell housings, what would stop someone from using those housings? They're certainly easily modified. What I'm also missing is the T-5 dimensions for the input shaft to the mounting surface. This may very well tell me that they're not able to be used. Mine should be here within a few days.

The mopar 3 and 4 speed bellhousings are 7.38" from mounting face at the engine to the mounting face on the back of the bellhousing...so you are 1/2 way there.

T5 mustang 94 and newer v6 and v8 input shaft lengths are the same at 7 13/16th" long or 7.8125" input bearing retainer is also the same between a v6 and v8 at 4.905" as measured off my '97 v6 T5. good book to pick and it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about NWC and WC T-5's is called how to rebuild and modify your manual transmission by Robert Bowen ( who is a member on these forums) publisher is motorbooks workshop I payed about $25. but the book takes you through step by step on a complete teardown and rebuild of a T5, that is well worth the price I paid I think,

Other than being cast iron, is my early 65' 3 speed bell housing any different than a newer aluminum 3 speed bell housng?

With an early 3 speed bell I think you are limited to the small clutch.

I used an aluminum early 3 speed bell for my swap .

The Belhousing we have is one of the newer 4 speed OD units with a couple pattenrs on it. Here are a few pics. The bearing retainer hole on this one is 4.910. Plate thickness is .370

Thanks much Rick. That is one of 2 options that I was considering. Did you use the 833 OD clutch release arm too? Also, what clutch? I'm hearing Slant 6 pressure plate (aftemarket) and Mustang disc.

We never installed this yet. I bought it from Seymour last year at the banquet. Sorry, I don't know the answer the clutch arm throw out bearing issues. I know that Lou used a hydraulic throw out bearing.
