 Post subject: disappearing dipsticks

My 66 slant six has a peculiar problem: It seems to be eating dipsticks. I'd had the car about a year, and during a long trip, I checked the oil and found the original dipstick broken off 4 inches below the handle. I thought it had broken because it was so old and replaced it with a junkyard stick. A couple hundred miles later, I found that it had also broken off.
I have two questions: 1) What's making this happen? Is the dipstick pilot shaft at the wrong angle and allowing the crankshaft to hit the stick? If so, how do I fix it?
2) Are the broken sticks lying in the oilpan out of harm's way, or do I need to worry about them getting caught in the motor? Do I need to pull the oilpan to get them out?

The stick is prob hitting the crank, I always just bend the top of tube closer to the block so the stick moves away from the crank. You should be able to bend the tube by hand with out pulling it out.

I bend the dipstick a little so it wolnt hit.

With some time, skill and perserverance you can often "fish" the old ends out the drain hole.
Use a magnet tool and some stiff wire. Plan on flushing-out loose slug after your done. (you will loosen & pull a lot of crud out in the process)
There is little to no chance the old ends will go anywhere so you may want to just let them lie at the bottom of the sump. (I have found a few in pans I removed over the year, most are buried in slug)

Never had that issue but did have 2 oil pump drive gears land in the bottom of one of mine.
