this may be a dumb question but i am getting many different answers about which 727 will bolt up to my 225 6 cyl 3spd auto 727 transmission on my 1987 Dodge B150 van ~~ is there a difference between the 6cyl 727 transmission and 8cyl 727 transmission ?? and i am talking truck & van transmission ~~ i should note this is an old Bellsouth telephone company van

Yup. Totally different bellhousing bolt pattern. There's an adaptor setup to mate the 8-cylinder trans to the 6-cylinder engine, but they're scarce and costly.

What's your situation? Van missing a transmission, transmission needs rebuilt, something else?

thanks SlantSixDan , transmission needs a rebuild ~~ had it done before( so i thought ) they pulled one off the shelf replaced my original ( didn't know they were going to do that ) its never been right ~~ so i was thinking about replacing it and wanted to get the right one ~~~ if i can find it ,

Do yourself a favor- track down a mid 80s 904 transmission with the wide ratio gearset and lockup torque converter. You will need a longer driveshaft, but will get better gas mileage and performance.

Not necessarily good advice. There's a reason why the 727 rather than the 904/998 was used in bigger, heavier, heavier-duty vehicles. It's no good saving a little gas if you spend it all back in transmission repairs sooner than later. And a lockup converter can be more curse than blessing in a cargo vehicle.

True, but the Dodge vans typically weigh in around 3600-4000 pounds, unladen. That is roughly comparable to a late Dart or Volare/Aspen. If he doesn't tow very often and doesn't haul heavy loads very often, then he doesn't really need a 727. Lots and lots of Mopar vans and trucks were built with 904s. I recently switched my brother's 1983 van from a 727 to a 904T (with lockup torque converter and the wide ratio gears) and acceleration improved and cruising RPMs dropped by about 400-500 rpm.

Like you say, it all depends on the intended use of the vehicle. For a daily driver that isn't a hauler, I don't think a 727 is necessary. If the van is a delivery or other type of work vehicle that hauls loads, then a 727 might be required.

I'd verify 100% for sure it IS a 727 and not a 904/998/999 as I've seen so many Mopar trannys called "727's" that weren't. in that year I'm guessing he already has a 904 (*or 900 series variant)

It probably is a 904 variant, but 727s were still available in 87.

My 87 Truck is a 727. Look at the Trans Pan if it has a notch where the dipstick goes in and report back here.

OK then. You need a 727 for a slant six. A v-8 727 won't bolt up directly.

there wwas a guy on here ("volare4life"?) that had a /6, 727 that he was looking to sell a while back; parts store reman. (advance/Murray's O'Reilly type store)
