I've got what appears to be a new problem. After I shut off the motor, after it's been running awhile, and then turn it back on the temp gauge jumps almost all the way over to hot. It slowly comes back down after running a few minutes. Recently I've replaced all the houses, thermostat, temp. sending unit, heater core and had a leak in the radiator repaired. They flushed and cleaned the radiator but did not rod it out. Should I worry about it?

No, that is what is called heat soak.

However, to minimize the effects of this on restarts I installed a heat deflector under the carb, cold ram air to the carb and electric fan to cool the engine after shut down. It will come on after shut off to cool the engine.

So it is setup like a modern car. Restarts a instant.....no cranking!

Sweet. I'm not sure what's possible on my 273 as far as a reflector goes. It usually starts fine though so maybe I shouldn't go looking for trouble.

It is only a big problem with the SL6 since the manifolds are bolted together. It kind of cooks (heat soaks) the carb after shut off. Especially on hot days.....

Where or how do I go about making or buying a heat deflector?

Just go to your local hobby shop or hardware store and look for the K&S rack for .090 thick aluminum. By the largest sheet, I believe it's 6" x 12". Purchase two carb gaskets. You can go with the thin ones or if you want to replace your studs go with (2) 1/2" thick gaskets. Trace around your carb to get a location so the throttle linkage clears, then use one of the gaskets as a template and drill it out.

Mine took about 30 minutes to make and bolt on. It acts like a heat deflector and also as a built in heat sync to keep the carb cool. With the fan blowing on it, it's always cooling......My carb never gets too hot anymore. It will stay luke warm even on the hottest days.

Hot starts after shopping are immediate and explosive. It is running before you can get your hand off the key.
