What's common for a 7.25? I took it out of a 67 Dart. By turning the wheel and counting revolutions, I'm getting close to a 3:91. Is that going to be correct? Can't find a tag w/ the info.

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,

I going to guess that you figured something wrong. 3.91 seems to be rather low geared coming from a Dart. Take a look here for method of calculating rear end ratios.

The gear ratio is stamped onto the ring gear but you have to remove the cover to see it.

Many 7 1/4 also have the gear ratio stamped into the axle housing but you can not be sure if that factory stamped number is still true...
Rear-ends get rebuilt or "repaired" and gears get changed in the process so take that stamping as "ref. only".

Generally on a 67 if it was an automatic it has a 2.93 and if it was a manual it would be 3.23.

I didnt know there was another Austin slant sixer! We should hang out!

Jared in Round Rock.

Thanks, guys. Looks like I've got a 3:23 (even if it did come from in back of a 904).

Jared--check out www.austinmopars.org ---it isn't only muscle cars. I agree we should get together some time.

Thanks again,

Joe

Same here! I have been looking for a nice 7.25 but they are either not available or super expensive. I even looked into getting higher gears from my rear...a place here in Huntington Beach, Ca quoted me $900 for gears and labor. Seems wayy to high but...it keeps it stock decisions decisions decisions

I have a couple of the 3.23 7 1/4 units up here near San Francisco, CA
These ship pretty resonably using FedEx Ground, if you just need the housing & gears. (no axle shafts or brake assemblies... swap-over to the ones you currently have)
